What is a horizon? A line where land meets sky? The end of the world or the beginning of perception? In this brilliant, engaging, and stimulating history, Didier Maleuvre journeys to the outer reaches of human experience and explores philosophy, religion, and art to understand our struggle and fascination with limits—of life, knowledge, existence, and death. Maleuvre sweeps us through a vast cultural landscape, enabling us to experience each stopping place as the cusp of a limitless journey, whether he is discussing the works of Picasso, Gothic architecture, Beethoven, or General Relativity. If, as Aristotle said, philosophy begins in wonder, then this remarkable book shows us how wonder—the urge to know beyond the conceivable—is itself the engine of culture.

Jonah was born on a dying spaceship. If everything had gone according to plan, Jonah would have lived and died aboard Horizon Delta, leaving his future descendants to colonize a new home for humanity. But the ship will never make it. The unforgiving journey has weakened their vessel and, when a meteor takes out the last of their remaining functional systems, they are stranded centuries from their final destination. Fifteen-year-old Jonah and his little brother are among the few survivors crowded into a tiny chamber, waiting for either the water or the air to run out. When they are picked up by a dark, silent alien spacecraft, the refugees believe they’re saved. But after days of being held captive, one by one, they start to be taken, never to return. With tensions rising and people disappearing, Jonah takes a desperate chance to escape their imprisonment. In order to find a safe haven for his brother and his people, Jonah must find allies against their advanced and ruthless enemies and make it back to a ship that is designed to be untraceable. Jonah is going to save his brother and the last of his people, no matter what it takes.

The second edition of Agriculture's Ethical Horizon is a carefully considered application of philosophical concepts, such as utilitarianism and positivism, to the practice of agricultural science. Author Robert Zimdahl argues for an approach to agriculture guided by foundational values, and addresses the questions: What are the goals of agricultural and weed science? What should their goals be? How do and how should the practitioners of agriculture address complex ethical questions? This book engages students, researchers, and professionals across disciplines including horticulture, soil and plant science, entomology, and more, all without requiring a background in philosophy. It examines topics such as scientific truth and myth, moral confidence in agriculture, the relevance of ethics to sustainability, and biotechnology. New to this edition is a chapter examining the raising, housing and slaughter of animals for human food, and a chapter on alternative and organic agricultural systems. Easily understood by non-philosophers Chapter sidebars highlight important concepts and can be used to engage students in further discussion Companion website includes further teaching aids and a discussion board

Mars Horizon is a story about the real science, infrastructure, and logistics needed to leave the planet and establish a permanent Martian base. On the other hand, its also about corporate greed and government overreach, the frailties of the human condition and the price to be paid in blood and treasure for daring to believe in impossible dreams. But most of all, this is an American storyrooted in science speculation and not just fiction; these events will occur and in our lifetime. Once the right technology matures, commercial enterprise fueled by an indomitable spirit will lead the way, and one day we will look up at the red planet and realize that we are driven to explore the universe not just as an adventure but as a homecoming.

Decentralization in Infinite Horizon Economies brings together a collection of essays that attempt to explore one of the basic themes in microeconomics — can a decentralized economy attain an efficient or optimal allocation of resources when it is allowed to evolve without a predetermined terminal date? The failure of a price-guided competitive system to ensure efficiency/Pareto optimality with an infinite horizon was exposed by Malinvaud and Samuelson. Subsequent research, reported in this volume, achieved a deeper understanding of the problem, and obtained definitive results that are of interest in a much broader framework.

“Journey to a New Life” in a nutshell: Easy life Disaster Bankruptcy Disaster New life? This is a story that starts as factual, describing in some detail how I lost nearly £1,000,000 of other people’s money and £750,000 of my own because of a change in the law, which my expensive solicitors didn’t tell me about! The fat cats of both the legal and accountancy profession then milked the situation, and as far as I know, investors got nothing back, despite the intervention of the Financial Services Authority. I say despite it all, it was probably because of their initial intervention the investors lost everything! Anyway, the story then descends into adventurous half-truths, stretched imagination, and a huge amount of wishful thinking. Some names have been changed to protect the innocent, some haven’t, and others are by inference only. Some place names, distances, and locations have been slightly modified to suit the second part of the story, but you can actually follow my journey across part of France either by bike, car, or if you so wished, on foot, and as you pass, certain features will be recognizable.

Torn from all that is familiar and dear, Louise finds herself in Newgate, that most notorious of British prisons. Here the innocent young woman must survive amongst thieves, prostitutes, and forgers, where catfights, drunkenness, hunger, and cold are a daily reality. But the worst is yet to come: a five-month sea journey to Botany Bay in Australia. In this male-dominated prisoner society on the other side of the world, women are regarded as a commodity, and those transported for minor crimes are treated as prostitutes. How can any woman retain her self-respect in such a setting? Yet one group of women coming out of Newgate managed it. Under the influence of Mrs Elizabeth Fry, a gentle Quaker, the female inmates in Newgate are taught to knit and sew, gaining confidence in themselves. Mrs Fry also opens a school for the prison’s children. But most important of all, the Quaker woman shares a message from the Bible so these women can face their future with hope.
