Lasseter s Gold

Lasseter s Gold

Was the body they found even his? What did happen to his vast, lost treasure? Did it ever exist? Does it still exist? LASSETER’S GOLD is the gripping story of an outback legend, a myth and, perhaps, a field of gold - there for the taking?

Is there a field of gold lying in the Australian outback, where nuggets are ‘as thick as plums in a pudding’? When Harold Bell Lasseter disappeared it could have been the end of a mystery that began the day he staggered out of the desert at the turn of the 20th century, almost dead, his pockets bulging with gold, claiming to have found a 15 kilometre gold reef. It was mystery that deepened when he and a surveyor returned to the isolated and mysterious Petermann Ranges where the reef was supposed to be located - and couldn’t find it. It became legendary when the largest inland expedition since Burke and Wills was launched and, from the start, like Burke and Wills, was doomed because the partners only had one thing in common: greed. In LASSETER’S GOLD, Warren Brown vividly recreates the drama of the search - the characters, the fights, the soaring temperatures, the impossible terrain, the plane crash, the pistol-carrying dingo-skinner who appeared out of nowhere. He also asks just who was this man Lasseter? A one-time sailor, a bigamist, a man who claimed John Bradfield stole his plans for a single span bridge to cross Sydney Harbour – was he also a very, very good liar? The entries in Lasseter’s diaries suggest he did find the gold, but that by then it was too late. The expedition had finished, he was alone and what he needed was food. Or did he? Was the body they found even his? What did happen to his vast, lost treasure? Did it ever exist? Does it still exist? LASSETER’S GOLD is the gripping story of an outback legend, a myth and, perhaps, a field of gold - there for the taking?

Lasseter's Reef mystery solved In 1930 Swedish immigrant Olof Johanson became the mystery man in the controversial and ultimately tragic attempt to find Lasseter's 'lost' gold reef in Central Australia. His role and what became of him remained unknown for over 80 years, until Melbourne film-maker Luke Walker began researching his 2012 documentary Lasseter's Bones. After Luke Walker contacted Olof's Australian-born daughter Alvhild, the story finally began to unfold, just in time. In 2013 Alvhild Johanson died. A year later, two of Alvhild's sons traveled to Sweden to visit their grandfather's grave and meet surviving members of his family. They were given the suitcase that Olof carried with him when he returned home 65 years earlier, along with a unique collection of photographs which recorded the 35 years Olof spent in Australia. The puzzle was now complete.

What is it about the Australian outback? For nearly two centuries, narratives of outback journeys have been suffused with the aura of death. Why? It is not just that the desert is big, dry, hot and apparently empty. The outback is Australia’s “mythological crucible,” and journeys there have become rites of passage. It is where settler Australians go to die and perhaps be reborn. This book explores the landscape of this evolving national mythology. It argues that a more conscious engagement with the process of symbolic death and rebirth is needed for Australians to enter into a deeper understanding of themselves and their relationship to the land and its Indigenous people.

Mickey Dewar made a profound contribution to the history of the Northern Territory, which she performed across many genres. She produced high‑quality, memorable and multi-sensory histories, including the Cyclone Tracy exhibition at the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory and the reinterpretation of Fannie Bay Gaol. Informed by a great love of books, her passion for history was infectious. As well as offering three original chapters that appraise her work, this edited volume republishes her first book, In Search of the Never-Never. In Dewar’s comprehensive and incisive appraisal of the literature of the Northern Territory, she provides brilliant, often amusing insights into the ever-changing representations of a region that has featured so large in the Australian popular imagination

This book examines the nexus between exploring and tourism and argues that exploration travel – based heavily on explorer narratives and the promises of personal challenges and change – is a major trend in future tourism. In particular, it analyses how romanticised myths of explorers form a foundation for how modern day tourists view travel and themselves. Its scope ranges from the 'Golden Age' of imperial explorers in the 19th and early 20th centuries, through the growth of adventure and extreme tourism, to possible future trends including space travel. The volume should appeal to researchers and students across a variety of disciplines, including tourism studies, sociology, geography and history.
