This volume is a six-part systematic, comprehensive, and up-to-date presentation, description, and methodological analysis of two hundred and forty-nine tables of statistics and related qualitative evidence on money, banking, and financial services in Chile. Part I, on money, deals with the historical statistics and related qualitative evidence needed to understand the monetary history of Chile from 1749 until the establishment of the Central Bank during 1925-6. Part II, on the banking system, presents information on the assets and liabilities of Chilean commercial banks during 1857-1900 and historical statistics of the Bank of Chile. Part III, on capital markets, contains extensive historical statistics on savings, mortgages, credit, and stocks and bonds, especially for the pre-1930 period. It also includes a description and analysis of credit asphyxia during 1940-1965. Part IV contains monetary statistics according to the old and new definitions of the Central Bank of Chile for the period 1960-1981. Part V contains detailed historical statistics on interest rates and the cost of credit for all or part of the 1848-1984 period. It also presents a theory of financial services which explains the contribution to income by the financial sector and the seeds of a theory of unilateral transfers. Part VI contains historical statistics, qualitative information and analysis of reserve requirements, income velocity of money, and demand for money, as well as a summary and the conclusions of this study.

This is the first work on British textile exports to South America during the nineteenth century. During this period, textiles ranked among the most important manufactures traded in the world market and Britain was the foremost producer. Thanks to new data, this book demonstrates that British exports to South America were transacted at very high rates during the first decades after independence. This development was due to improvements in the packing of textiles; decreasing costs of production and introduction of free trade in Britain; falling ocean freight rates, marine insurance and import duties in South America; dramatic improvements in communications; and the introduction of better port facilities. Manuel Llorca-Jaña explores the marketing chain of textile exports to South America and sheds light on South Americans' consumer behaviour. This book contains the most comprehensive database on Anglo-South American trade during the nineteenth century and fills an important gap in the historiography.

In 1990, after almost 17 years of military rule, Chile became the only Latin American country where a democratic regime coexists with free market policies which actually work. The book explores this paradox, and it examines the prospects for future economic growth with income redistribution under free market rules and democratic politics. The author examines amongst other things, short-term policymaking, education, health, the labour market, women, the middle sectors, privatisation, market imperfections, the state, non-government organisations, external trade, the financial sector and the external debt.

This study makes a solid case for the now prevalent contention that the development model of East Asian NICs is less costly (i.e. over inflation levels and more equitable income distribution), more adaptive to fluctuating would market conditions (eg. successful adjustment to the two oil crises) and more sustainable (i.e. high growth rates, even in the turbulent 1970s) than that of the Latin American NICs. In considering these issues, this book examines the major Latin American countries' economic problems and development experiences in light of the more successful stabilization and development experiences of the East Asian countries, Taiwan and South Korea in particular.

Recent concern with economic growth has led not only to a vast increase in the quantity and quality of statistics collected and published, but also to an upsurge of interest in the statistics of the past. As attention has turned more and more to the study of the comparative development of different countries, so a need has been felt for a collection of historical statistics comparing different nations. This work meets the need as far as the Americas is concerned. 'A landmark for the economic historian. It is seldom that a publication truly deserves the name of a pioneering book. This one does' English Historical Review 'No economic library should be without it' Economic Journal.

The-five volume Oxford History of Protestant Dissenting Traditions series is governed by a motif of migration ('out-of-England'). It first traces organized church traditions that arose in Britain and Ireland as Dissenters distanced themselves from a state church defined by diocesan episcopacy, the Book of Common Prayer, the Thirty-Nine Articles, and Royal Supremacy, but then follows those traditions as they spread beyond Britain and Ireland—and also analyses newer traditions that emerged downstream in other parts of the world from earlier forms of Dissent. Secondly, it does the same for the doctrines, church practices, stances toward state and society, attitudes toward Scripture, and characteristic patterns of organization that also originated in earlier British and Irish dissent, but that have often defined a trajectory of influence independent of ecclesiastical organizations. The Oxford History of Protestant Dissenting Traditions, Volume V follows the spatial, cultural, and intellectual changes in dissenting identity and practice in the twentieth century, as these once European traditions globalized. While in Europe dissent was often against the religious state, dissent in a globalizing world could redefine itself against colonialism or other secular and religious monopolies. The contributors trace the encounters of dissenting Protestant traditions with modernity and globalization; changing imperial politics; challenges to biblical, denominational, and pastoral authority; local cultures and languages; and some of the century's major themes, such as race and gender, new technologies, and organizational change. In so doing, they identify a vast array of local and globalizing illustrations which will enliven conversations about the role of religion, and in particular Christianity.

Few dispute that a major turning point in the history of present-day Chile commenced with the election in 1970 of a Marxist physician, Salvador Allende. What followed were three years that shook South America, if not the world. Land reform, factory expropriation, the politicization of a sector of the armed forces, curriculum reform in education, each in their turn led to a hardening of political fault lines, and created the basis for the overthrow of the Allende regime. This work, by one of the foremost analysts of modern Chile, features an interview with an earlier president of that beleaguered country, Eduardo Frei. In what is likely to be viewed as the most authoritative statement to date on U.S.Chile relationships during this stormy period, Falcoff debunks the myth of a CIA-inspired overthrow of the democratic forces, placing responsibility on Allende's failure to obtain or even seek a decisive electoral mandate, on a governing coalition internally inconsistent and frequently at war with its constituent elements, on an economic policy that polarized supporters and enemies, and ultimately on the need to turn to the military for the stability that its policy failures could not achieve. The final chapter, on the assumption to power and political changes rendered by the present ruler, General Augusto Pinochet Ugarte, indicates that the problems of Chile are not attributable to any single ruler or party. Falcoff indicates that core problems in Chile, from capital formation to the search for diversification, were exemplified in cultural, moral, and spiritual values between the Frei and Allende epochs. The prolonged Pinochet regime, for Falcoff, has postponed settlement of the major issues raised by the democratic era: equality and growth, legality and legitimacy. The costs of democratic order remain for Chileans to confront and resolve.
