Volume 6 of the complete catalogue of Henry Moore's drawings records 732 drawings produced in 1982 and 1983. Moore's intensive drawing activity in the years 1982 and 1983 was related to the fact that ailing health prevented him from creating new sculpture. Although he continued to draw until his death in 1986, the drawings which appear in this volume represent the last fully active period of the artist's life. In these drawings he revisited many of the themes that had preoccupied him throughout his career; reclining figures, his own hands, trees, studies after works of art in his collection, mothers with children, domestic subjects such as a woman reading. Ever inventive, he produced a new effect by holding charcoal sketches under running water so that the charcoal was dispersed over the entire page; after drying them between blotting paper, he applied watercolour washes of different colours which merged with each other on the still damp page, resulting in some delicate Turneresque seascapes and skyscapes. Moore's lifelong interest in Nature and above all in the human figure dominates his drawings. He would often remark, 'People think that they look but they don't really, you know'. Throughout his working life, Moore never ceased in his endeavours to teach people how to look, how to see, how to appreciate what he himself called 'the wonderful world of Nature'. This volume includes a preface and an explanation of how to use the book, an introduction by the Editor, detailed catalogue entries of each work with a black and white illustration, plus 16 pages of colour plates. The catalogue of drawings completes the published recording of Moore's work and provides an essential reference tool for museums, galleries, collectors and students of twentieth-century art.

The time is ripe for a fundamental reassessment of the impact that Futurism had on British culture and of Vorticism - the specifically British avant-garde movement inspired by the founder of the Italian Futurist movement, Filippo Tommasao Marinetti. This text, which accompanies an exhibition at the Estorick Collection of Modern Italian Art, combines novel material and original research to provide a coherent overview of Futurism and Vorticism, before, during and after World War I. The exhibition is the first major showing by the movement since 1974 and the text illustrates works in a wide range of media by England's only Futurist, C.R.W. Nevinson, and by the core of artists associated with Vorticism: Wyndham Lewis; Edward Wadsworth; Frederick Etchells; William Roberts; Henri Gaudier-Brzeska; Jacob Epstein; and Jacob Kramer. The influence exerted on these artists by the Italian Futurists Umberto Boccioni, Giacomo Balla, Gino Severini and the mercurial impresario of Futurism, Marinetti, is explored fully. The works illustrated are from a range of prominent public and private collections, a number having never previously been exhibited.

Nineteenth Century British Women's Education brings together key documents in the Victorian feminist campaign to establish and improve girls’ and women’s education. Drawing widely on articles from the feminist and established press, government papers, newspapers, professional and association journals, as well as memoirs, addresses, pamphlets and reviews, this collection gives researchers access to nineteenth-century debates on improving girls’ and women’s education and women’s work as educators. The collection is divided overall into two sections, both of which incorporate materials that argue for the improvement of girls’ and women’s education as well as arguments made against education for girls and women. In examining the campaign to establish higher education for women, the first volumes include the writings of such primary figures as Emily Davies, Lydia Becker, Barbara Bodichon, Jessie Boucherett, Josephine Butler, Frances Power Cobbe, Millicent Garrett Fawcett, Maria Grey and Emily Shirreff in addition to illustrating the significance of institutions such as Girton and Newnham Colleges. Later volumes document women's work as educators, and include writings by Mary Carpenter, Dorothea Beale, Frances Mary Buss, and the Shirreff sisters Maria and Emily, gifted educators of girls at the elementary and secondary levels, and women whose educational practice embodied the arguments they made on behalf of girls’ education. These volumes also chart the importance of the Governesses’ Benevolent Institution, the Schools Inquiry Commission and the Journal of Women’s Education Union in charting the increasing organization and professionalization of women teachers. Edited and with new introductions by Susan Hamilton and Janice Schroeder, Nineteenth Century British Women's Education is destined to be an invaluable reference resource to all future scholars of feminism and the history of education.
