Having attended a great many conferences over the years my observation is that the modern church is largely concerned with matters such as leadership, growing the numbers in your congregations, or church planting. There is no doubt at all that these are wonderful and necessary topics to facilitate the building of the Kingdom of God. There is, however, very little focus on healing ministries and as a consequence the doctors are the first port of call for physical problems. For many churches, even large city congregations, if there are mental or emotional issues the people are sent to psychiatrists or Christian counselors trained in secular techniques. In contrast if we look at the Jesus model, His focus was on healing the sick, freeing those with demonic bondages and healing the broken hearted. Apparently, His disciples freely received this ministry from Christ themselves before they were commissioned to take the good news to the World. Matthew 10:8 Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those who have leprosy, drive out demons. Freely you have received, freely give. NIV Perhaps we could look at it in this way. Imagine if you were putting together a football team and selecting your players. "Alright, I choose that man over there with one leg, the blind guy, that deaf fellow, the man with one eye, those chaps with the back braces on, and those cripples." Then you launched them out onto the field, yelling with great enthusiasm and encouragement; "Go get them guys!" It doesn't make much sense to me, but many of us have been around churches where the focus is on trying to motivate broken people to live a victorious life of faith. We have all seen the fallout and problems from people with unresolved issues active in a church environment. Remember the 'Vasa' There is an old Swedish warship housed in a museum in Stockholm called by the name of 'Vasa.' She was commissioned to be built by the King of Sweden Gustavus Adolphus for use in the war with Poland-Lithuania and was constructed 1626-27. Upon completion she was considered to be one of the most powerful warships in the world at the time. A tremendous amount of resource was put into her, and she presented with rich and ornate decorations. She was loaded with large and powerful guns. Unfortunately, all of the expense and efforts went into her appearance and equipment for war. Not enough time was spent on the design and what was done below the waterline out of sight. The result was that she appeared to be a splendid, dangerous and formidable enemy, when in fact she was unstable in her foundation and not well ballasted. Sadly only 1400 meters into her maiden voyage she encountered a gust of wind which caused the ship to capsize and sink. The guns had just been fired as a grand salute to onlookers as the vessel left Stockholm. The lesson for us is if we spend all of our time on presentation and how things look, and neglect dealing with the sub surface problems of the church we may not ever even get into battle. If we train people in leadership, and develop or release gifts but don't deal with the unresolved issues in their lives, are we building on sand? We have found that if we focus on the people being set free, the gifts and leadership come with motivation that God is pleased to bless. At times I have ministered to leadership teams of larger churches and have been amazed at what is often going on in the background. I thoroughly believe that healing the brokenhearted and setting the captives free was the main ministry of Jesus for a very good reason. If we want to be the stable church that God is pleased to anoint, we may need to consider spending a little more time on working below the water line and sorting out the areas that are not always visible.

Sharon Shaw is a respected psychotherapist specialising in cases of childhood sexual, emotional and mental abuse. Few of Shaw's clients would know that her brilliance as a therapist comes from profound personal experience. Her early life has inspired and informed her therapeutic techniques, now shared in this remarkable book, A Child Inside: understanding, healing and freedom following childhood abuse and trauma. Now an adult woman with the language and training to explain and analyse her experiences of abuse, Shaw revisits herself as that damaged child, with the support of her personal counsellor, her mother and other important safe connections. She reveals a frightened child, lost in a world that was not safe for her, trapped in a body and with a developing brain that wasn't yet mature enough to understand and articulate the horrors she was experiencing, thinking and feeling, all of which conflicted with what she had been taught by family and society at large: she knew they were meant to protect her but why had they failed to do so? A Child Inside explores the complex issues of trust and responsibility between adults and children, charting the progression from acute distress through cognitive and intuitive understanding and ultimately towards forgiveness.

Free: Finding Freedom and Healing From Your Past is a study providing forgiveness, freedom, healing and hope to those who've been wounded by their sexual past, whether through choices of their own or other's choices forced upon them. An estimated 95% of people today have sex before marriage, a recent survey has discovered. The sexual revolution promised freedom, fun and pleasure but has delivered pain, shame and wounding instead. The result? Present lives and marriages that are haunted by the past. Shame, regret, sexual dysfunction, broken relationships, struggling marriages, an empty spiritual life--all because of sexual bonding in our pasts. In other words, you've had sex. But now sex has you. Until you heal. If you've asked for forgiveness--you've been forgiven, without question. But healing is different. Forgiveness reconciles us to God, but healing reconciles us to us, and then to others. Barbara's book, The Invisible Bond: How To Break Free From Your Sexual Past (Multnomah Publishers 2006) has pioneered the way for men and women to discover the truth about sexual bonding and how it has impacted them. Hearts have been opened to hear the message and begin the healing process. This companion Bible Study takes the healing journey to a greater depth by walking men and women through a grieving process for their sexual pasts, breaking the bonds from past sexual relationships, reversing the lies we've ingrained with God's truth and enabling us to re-bond in present or future relationships. Step by step the reader will walk the path Barbara took on her own healing journey as well as many others since.

Each one of us has hurts, hang-ups, and habits that need healing. The Road to Freedom is the path to hope for all of us who are in pain or simply stuck. With practical application and inspiration, Johnny Baker shares his story of recovering from alcoholism and offers the truths he has learned from his 25 years with Celebrate Recovery. Baker’s father, John, founded Celebrate Recovery when Baker was 15 years old. Later, Baker would become involved with alcohol himself. Even though he saw his parents’ marriage heal and watched his dad become a new person, he had to experience his own journey of healing. Baker began the process of recovery as a young adult. Now he serves on the leadership team of Celebrate Recovery, sharing his testimony of how God brought him back home. In the years since leaving alcohol behind, Baker has witnessed thousands of other lives change through the power of Christ. Whether you are dealing with substance abuse, relational struggles, or eating challenges, or you simply want to let go of what is holding you back in life, you will find answers in The Road to Freedom. In addition to telling his own story, Baker offers ten principles of healing. These life lessons remind you that pain has a purpose, small and steady improvement lasts longer than overnight change, serving others leads to deeper healing, and facing your problems is the only way to heal. The Road to Freedom will help you move from coping with hurts, hang-ups, and habits to the hope and health that only Jesus can bring.
