Examines three Jewish chronicles of the First Crusade: the Chronicle of Solomon ben Simson, the Chronicle of Eliezer ben R. Nathan, and the Anonymous Chronicle of Mainz, with the goal to analyze the ideology of martyrdom found in them and to trace its background. Notes the characteristic motifs in these chronicles: joy of martyrdom, heavenly reward to the martyrs, martyrdom as a decree of God, death of martyrs as a promise of the Messianic redemption, and the most unusual for the Jewish literature motif - active martyrdom. The communities suffered a disaster that surpassed all the previous outbursts of anti-Jewish violence in the region, and they wanted to come to terms with it and to infuse it with a meaning. Concludes that although some Biblical and midrashic motifs can be found in the chronicles, the ideology of martyrdom in them share many of its characteristics with the Christian contemporary counterparts. This fact may be attributed either to Christian influence or to a common contemporary European discourse of martyrdom. Notes that medieval Ashkenazic Jews were part of their non-Jewish surroundings in a greater degree than it has been supposed.

God Wills It is a comprehensive study of presidential religious rhetoric. Using careful analysis of hundreds of transcripts, David O'Connell reveals the hidden strategy behind presidential religious speech. He asks when and why religious language is used, and when it is, whether such language is influential.Case studies explore the religious arguments presidents have made to defend their decisions on issues like defense spending, environmental protection, and presidential scandals. O'Connell provides strong evidence that when religious rhetoric is used public opinion typically goes against the president, the media reacts harshly to his words, and Congress fails to do as he wants. An experimental chapter casts even further doubt on the persuasiveness of religious rhetoric.God Wills It shows that presidents do not talk this way because they want to. Presidents like Jimmy Carter and George H.W. Bush were quite uncomfortable using faith to promote their agendas. They did so because they felt they must. God Wills It shows that even if presidents attempt to call on the deity, the more important question remains: Will God come when they do?

Believing God For a Miracle? In as much as man does not live on miracles but by principles, yet he needs miracles for excellence. This is because man faces periodic indomitable problems in his life and career as a result of obstructive spiritual intrusions and human limitations. Eventually, man's limitations beckon on God's visitations, and the result is 'miracle'. God performs miracles not just because He is God, but because man needs it. Man, therefore, is the purpose of a miracle. No matter man's abilities, he must come to a point where he hits the wall, and at such times, expertise and competence fail, counsel and principles yield no results, and all efforts bear no fruits. At such moments, man needs a supernatural aid. This is true of every man on earth. For example, irrespective of the endless principles on sound health and wealth, more than ninety per cent of the world's population lives in sickness and poverty. Why? This is because principles must couple with miracles for excellence to be achieved; man needs God in all his efforts! Thus, every man needs miracles, and the good news is that God wants to give supernatural aid to him. Man's powers has limitation but God's miracle knows no limit This book covers the following: The purpose of miracles How miracles works The secrets to accessing god's miracles How to become a living ark of testimony How to use your faith to tap miracles from god How to use the word of your mouth to get miracles Unbelievable real life testimonies and more... The disciples could have been drowned by the tempest, had Jesus not rescued them miraculously. Peter could have been beheaded like James, had the angel not rescued him from the prison. The wife of the prophet could have lost her two sons to the creditors, had Elijah not intervened with a miraculous hand. Such is life since the fall of man. By miracles, God took the Israelites out of Egypt, and by miracles, He took them to the Canaan Land; even so, by miracles, God will guide you into your destiny, both eternal and temporal; hence, the book God Wants to Give You a Miracle. What if we were wired for happiness? If you were to ask a room full of people about how God wants us to live, you’d likely get a wide range of answers. Some people would say he wants us to be holy. Others might claim he wants us to love people and stand up for peace and justice. But chances are, you wouldn’t hear anyone say, “God wants us to be happy.” We all want to be happy, but we may feel guilty for this longing. Isn’t it selfish to pursue happiness? Isn’t it more spiritual to frown than to smile? In a world full of brokenness, is happiness a worthy pursuit? For those seeking to follow Jesus, should this quest be written off as superficial and unspiritual? In Does God Want Us to Be Happy?, New York Times bestselling author Randy Alcorn offers a collection of short, easy readings on one of life’s biggest questions. As he explores what happiness is and how we attain it, Alcorn provides wisdom, insight, and scriptural proof that God not only wants us to be happy—he commands it! (Adapted from the trade book Happiness.)

Be careful. This book is dangerous. It explores with startling freshness the most important question you could ever ask, and offers with breathtaking courage the most extraordinary answer you could ever imagine. That answer is so theologically revolutionary and so spiritually empowering that it could change the course of human history. If embraced, it most certainly will change your life. There are people and institutions in the world, long in place and long in power, that want neither of these outcomes to occur. They would rather that you put this book down right now. It's up to you.

God Wants You Well

God Wants You Well

From that assumption, people teach that God sometimes wants us sick. In this book, Andrew reveals what Paul's thorn in the flesh was, and it wasn't sickness. If it is God's will to heal everyone, then why isn't everyone healed?

Health is something everyone wants. Billions of dollars are spent each year trying to retain or restore health. It is a basic desire of all mankind. Anyone who likes sickness must be mentally sick! Yet, religion has told us that God is the one who wants us sick. It even tries to make us believe that sickness is a blessing. That's just not true. God wants you well. Healing is in Christ's Atonement. Jesus died for our health just as much as He died for the forgiveness of our sins. This has to be the foundation of our faith for healing. Many Scriptures relate the healing of our bodies and the forgiveness of our sins in the same verse. Jesus went about healing all who were oppressed of the devil and told us to do the same. Jesus hasn't changed, it's the people who represent Him who have changed. What about Paul's thorn in the flesh? It is commonly believed that the apostle Paul had a sickness for which he besought the Lord for healing three times, and the Lord wouldn't heal him. From that assumption, people teach that God sometimes wants us sick. In this book, Andrew reveals what Paul's thorn in the flesh was, and it wasn't sickness. If it is God's will to heal everyone, then why isn't everyone healed? It's not because of God. And it's not just because we don't have enough faith. We do have the faith to be healed. Jesus said the problem is our unbelief - unbelief cancels out faith. Instead of trying to get more faith or bigger faith, we just need a pure faith that isn't negated by unbelief. There are laws that govern the spiritual world just as there are laws that govern the physical realm. Electricity has been around since the beginning of the world, but mankind didn't benefit from electricity until recently, not because it didn't work, but because of our ignorance of the laws of electricity. Likewise, God's healing is here and available. It's only our ignorance of the laws which control the flow of God's power that keeps us from benefiting from it.

So often children know stories from the Bible but don't understand the story of the Bible as a whole, the metanarrative. This book seeks to tell the big story of the Bible in an accessible and engaging way. For very young children the pictures have been designed to tell the story without words, older children can have it read to them or, from about the age of 6 or 7 should be able to read it for themselves. Why is it important that children understand the big story of the Bible anyway? Often as children grow up, particularly if they are part of a church and/or have Christian parents, they will hear how much God loves them, that Jesus loves them; and that God loves the world. It's a great message and one I firmly believe in; but it creates a 'love bubble' which can easily burst when children start to become more aware of and engage with the world around them. A child who has grown up in this 'love bubble' might get to aged 6 or 7 and find that a pet dies, they begin to engage with news media for the first time and are surrounded by sadness; or perhaps a family member dies. Where is the God who loves them now? How could a God who loves them and is their friend let this happen? The love bubble bursts, and the risk is that children turn their back on God because they can't align what they have been taught with the world around them that they are beginning to understand. I believe children need to grow up knowing that God loves them and wants to be their friend, but also that the world is broken and not how God wants it to be. Children need to be given a lens to help them make sense of what they see and understand from the world around them. Teaching children about brokenness at the same time as love avoids the love bubble and the consequences of it bursting. God's Big Story also includes the idea of choices, the choices we make every day but also that being God's friend is a choice. Wrong choices caused the world to break but the essence of God giving choice is love. A God who wants to be our friend allows us to choose how to respond because He loves people. Children are invited to engage with the story, to make choices, on every page. At the end of the book children are invited to choose how they want to respond to what they have heard. God's Big Story aims to tell the big story of the Bible so that children have a frame of reference to fit individual Bible stories into. It also makes the foundations of the Christian faith accessible to children and lays foundations for the future.

Stacking the Deck

Stacking the Deck

In one fall, MAC gave away 600 worshipers and three pastors. These are just a few examples of how God led ordinary people from within the church to walk into the extraordinary plans He had planned for them.

Pastor Guy Pfanz, like so many others in the church, had learned "Christ is the head of the church" by rote. This foundational truth is often a filler in Christian jargon; a pat response repeated instead of a fact that orders steps because the expectation to build the church relentlessly plagues nearly every church in America. Whether the pressure stems from a church board, the congregation, or the pastor, the result is the same: pastors and congregations slip into Christ's rightful place as head of the church. If we return the headship of the church to Christ, God will bring us to the end of ourselves. As the story of Pastor Pfanz and Muncie Alliance Church (MAC) illustrates, the journey is painful, but God is faithful. In their moments of desperation, He spoke promises hinting at their future. In the place of the phrase stripped of its meaning: "Christ is the head of the body," He gave the body of Muncie Alliance new words: I m going to stack the deck.I'm going to bring in the right people at the right time to do the right things. I will build My church. And true to His word by His Holy Spirit He birthed something new and creative out of the ordinary. MAC began an internship program where students are taught theology and practice ministry and are eventually accredited with the Christian and Missionary Alliance to plant churches. The students graduate debt-free because they are able to offset their costs and receive a stipend through Alliance World Coffees, a coffee roasting business. He led MAC into a multi-site church where each site is pastored by someone raised up from within MAC. In one fall, MAC gave away 600 worshipers and three pastors. These are just a few examples of how God led ordinary people from within the church to walk into the extraordinary plans He had planned for them. In Revelation 3:20 Jesus calls out to the Laodiceans, "Behold! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him, and he with me." Isn't it heartbreaking that Christ is on the outside of his church? The Laodiceans had boasted, "I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing," and yet their savior was no where to be found inside their church. God is able and desires to build His church. He wants it more than His people do. Yet oftentimes, Christ stands at the door of His church and knocks! If believers return the headship of the church back to Christ, we will witness God's boundless creativity and power as He builds His church by His Spirit.Readers will see how Christ desires to build His church through the real life narratives of Muncie Alliance Church and learn how this perspective affects believers' ideas about prayer, leadership, and failure. Each chapter concludes with questions for reflection.
