The current political, economic and financial crises facing the EU reveal a deeper cultural, indeed spiritual, malaise – a crisis in ‘the soul of Europe’. Many observers are concluding that the ‘soul of Europe’ cannot be restored to health without a new appreciation of the contribution of religion to its past and future, and especially that of its hugely important but widely neglected Christian heritage, which is alive today even amidst advancing European secularization. This book offers a fresh, constructive and critical understanding of Christian contributions to the origin and development of the EU from a variety of theological and national perspectives. It explains the Christian origins of the EU, documents the various ways in which it has been both affirmed and critiqued from diverse theological perspectives, offers expert, theologically-informed assessments of four illustrative policy areas of the EU (trade, finance, environment, science), and also reports on the place of religion in the EU, including how religious freedom is framed and how contemporary religious (including Muslim) actors relate to EU institutions and vice versa. The book fills a major gap in the current debate about the future of the European project and will be of interest to students and scholars of religion, politics and European studies.

Religious actors are becoming part of the EU bureaucratic system, and their mobilisation in Brussels and Strasbourg in the last decade has increased dramatically. This book explores the mechanism and impact of religious representation by examining relations between religious practitioners and politicians in the European Union from the Second World War until today. This book seeks to answer the following questions: How do (trans)national religious groups enter into contact with European institutions? What are the rationale and the mechanisms of religious representation in the European Union? How are religious values transposed into political strategies? What impact has relations between religious practitioners, EU officials and politicians on the construction of the European Union? Examining religious representation at the state, transnational and institutional levels, this volume demonstrates that 'faith' is becoming an increasingly important element of the decision-making process. It includes chapters written by both academics and religious practitioners in dialogue with European institutions and will be of great interest to students and scholars of European politics, history, sociology of religion, law and international relations.

This book is a theological reflection about the process and event of Brexit: Britain’s departure from the European Union. Within a framework of liberation and postmodern theology, it examines Brexit against a history of the EU, with themes of community, identity, marriage, and divorce. It considers the emotional reactions which have been generated, and places Brexit in the context of contemporary populism and the politics of the United States. The book concludes with a call for reconciliation via new imaginaries of solidarity and inclusion.

How to Pick a Fight with God...and LOSE! Many people follow what is published in the mainstream media about the European Union and the United Kingdom's departure from it. However, they do not think about the spiritual side of what is behind it all. The reason for writing this book is very clear. I aim to show that the spirit behind the set up of the EU is not a godly one but an evil one. The EU will lead to a "One World Government," which you can already see coming into view as you read your newspapers or watch your tv news programmes. We all need to be warned about what is happening in our world in light of these developments. We also need to be aware of the dangers of ignoring what the Bible says is going to happen in these end days. This is the only way to prepare for the times ahead. The Seat of The Antichrist: Bible Prophecy and The European Union identifies the European Union as the final world empire and explains what Bible Prophecy predicts will occur in the end times. The reader discovers the relationship between Bible Prophecy, the European Union and today's current affairs. The Seat of the Antichrist details the European Union's history and institutional structure and shows how it aligns with Bible Prophecy. Bible Prophecy comprises one third of the Bible. The Bible's last book, The Revelation, predicts the events leading to the end of the world. It provides the details for the Tribulation, which occur during a seven year period of wars, plagues, earthquakes and calamities, which end in the battle of Armageddon. Part of the earth's judgments happen through a leader who rises to power from the final world empire predicted in Bible Prophecy. Evangelical Christians customarily refer to this leader as The Antichrist. The Seat of the Antichrist is the first book dealing with Bible Prophecy, which shows prophecy's relation in the present geopolitical framework and in doing so dismisses end-time conspiracy theories, which Bible Prophecy works often rely on. No book dealing with Bible Prophecy provides such in-depth analysis and extensive research as The Seat of the Antichrist: Bible Prophecy and The European Union, which presents the reader with a gripping, riveting expose.

Bible prophecy gives us signs of the end times. Just like road signs, they come closer together as we near the end. According to the Bible, in the last days-in a time when Israel has been restored as a nation-a 10-nation confederacy will appear on the European continent. It will be a revival of the Roman Empire. From this confederacy, one man will rise to power. He will make a seven-year agreement with Israel that he will break in three and a half years. This man is known as the Antichrist and, in some way, he will be identified with the number 666. Are You Sitting Down? What if I said that an important warning sign about the rise of the Antichrist began occurring in 1992, but it has been completely overlooked? And what if I told you that the 10 kings of Daniel and Revelation may have already been on scene since 1995, but no one has noticed? Not only that, but a powerful new office has been created that could soon belong to the Antichrist. And, it happened with Assembly Recommendation 666. Hang on, because that's exactly what I'm going to tell you.

This book discusses the 2450 year-long journey of the evolution of human rights, beginning from their earliest manifestation through Sophocles’ tragedy Antigone (442 BCE). It then moves on to look at the relationship between human rights and the likes of Cicero and Jesus, Erasmus and the intellectuals of the Enlightenment, before considering the very roots of the idea of Europe, which goes back to the liberal and federalist thought of the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The book concludes with the Charter of the EU Fundamental Rights becoming legally binding for Member States in Lisbon in 2009. While inquiring into the origins of European shared values, it assesses their compatibility with a non-European culture and religion such as Islam.

Étienne Gilson (1884-1978) was a French philosopher and historian of philosophy, as well as a scholar of medieval philosophy. In 1946 he attained the distinction of being elected an Immortal (member) of the Académie française. He was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1959 and 1964. The appearance of Gilson's Metamorphosis of the City of God, which were originally delivered as lectures at the University of Louvain, Belgium, in the Spring of 1952, coincided with the first steps toward what would become the European Union. The appearance of this English translation coincides with the upheaval of Brexit. Gilson traces the various attempts of thinkers through the centuries to describe Europe's soul and delimit its parts. The Scots, Catalonians, Flemings, and probably others may nod in agreement in Gilson's observation on how odd would be a Europe composed of the political entities that existed two and a half centuries ago. Those who think the European Union has lost its soul may not be comforted by the difficulty thinkers have had over the centuries in defining that soul. Indeed the difficulties that have thus far prevented integrating Turkey into the EU confirm Gilson's description of the conundrum involved even in distinguishing Europe's material components. And yet, the endeavor has succeeded, so that the problem of shared ideals remain inescapable. One wonders which of the thinkers in the succession studied by Gilson might grasp assent and illuminate the EU's path.
