German vocabulary book + German dictionary This German vocabulary book contains more than 3000 words and phrases which are grouped by topic to make it easier for you to pick what to learn first. On top of that, the index in the second half of the book provides you with a basic German-English as well as English-German dictionary which makes this a great resource for learners of all levels. What you can expect from this book: This German learning resource is a combination of German vocabulary book and a two-way basic German dictionary: Part 1 - Topic based German vocabulary book: This is the main part of the book and represents a list of chapters each containing German vocabularies for a certain topic. The German vocabularies in the chapters are unsorted on purpose to separate remembering them from a defined alphabetical order. You can start at any chapter and dive directly into the topics that interest you the most. Part 2 - Basic English-German dictionary: The index in the second half of the book can be used as a basic German dictionary to look up words you have learned but can't remember or learn new words you need. Part 3 - Basic German-English dictionary: Easy to use and with just the right amount of words, this third part finishes off with a second index that allows you to look for German words and directly find the English translation How to use this German vocabulary book: Not sure where to start? We suggest you first work your way through the verbs, adjectives and phrases chapters in part one of the book. This will give you a great base for further studying and already enough vocabulary for basic communication. The German dictionaries in part two and three can be used whenever needed to look up words you hear on the street, English words you want to know the German translation for or simply to learn some new words. Some final thoughts: Vocabulary books have been around for centuries and as with so many things that have been around for some time, they are not very fashionable and a bit boring, but they usually work very well. Together with the basic German dictionary parts, this vocabulary book is a great resource to support you throughout the process of learning German and comes in particularly handy at times when there is no internet to look up words and phrases.

This intensive lexical builder is addressed to B1-B2 intermediate learners of German, who are already capable of reading easy German stories, and who would like to enrich (and/or refresh) their vocabulary up to the advanced level in order to approach more complex German texts. Each piece of vocabulary is embedded in at least three example sentences in order to appeal to active understanding and trigger both short-term and long-term memory. Whenever possible, different meanings of the terms or expressions concerned are also illustrated. The vocabulary lessons are interspersed with concise but essential reminders of German grammar. At the end of the book, readers are offered a bilingual, paragraph for paragraph version of one of E. T. A. Hoffmann’s famous stories, namely “Rath Krespel” (1818), translated in English by J. T. Bealby (1885). In each pair of bilingual paragraphs, important words to retain or recognize are emphasized in bold or underlined. Finally, the bilingual version is followed by the original, German only text of Hoffmann’s novel – which readers are advised to go through, even if by now they know the narrative – since it is essential to retrieve and fully consolidate all learned German terms into their original context. Unlike your average A-to-Z German/English dictionary, Mastering German Vocabulary presents more than 5,000 words in 41 separate categories. This arrangement allows students to understand the relationships of various words. Categories cover the human body, health and medicine, sports, culture and religion, and dozens of other subjects. Engaging example sentences help illustrate the meanings of words and also inform readers on idiomatic expressions, grammatical exceptions, and cultural and geographical information. English-speaking readers will find help in translating those German words and phrases that may be too specialized to be found in ordinary alphabetically arranged bilingual dictionaries. Engaging line art illustrations, charts, and a comprehensive alphabetical word index enhances this volume's usefulness. A fine school supplement for language teachers, students, and language labs, and an aid for anyone who must sometimes get information from German journals and other publications.

On the initiative of Professor Paul Tillich, lectures on theological German were given at Union Theological Seminary, New York (beginning in 1948), later also at Princeton Theological Seminary, at Yale University Divinity School, and at the Theological Seminary of Drew University. In the course of the lectures faculty members and students asked me repeatedly for a special German-English theological vocabulary. This book is intended to meet their request. It contains basic theological expressions the knowledge of which is indispensable for reading theological texts. Furthermore it seemed to be expedient to include words which, although not strictly theological, are often used in a theological context. . . . In principal my selection has been limited to words and phrases current in theological writing of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. --from the Preface
