Taphonomy, the study of the processes leading to the fossilization of organic remains, is one of the most important avenues of inquiry in human origins research. Breathing Life into Fossils is a major contribution to taphonomic studies in paleoanthropology and natural history. This book emanates from a Stone Age Institute conference celebrating the life and career of naturalist Bob Brain, a pioneer in bringing taphonomic perspectives to human evolutionary studies. Contributions by leading researchers provide a state-of-the art look at the maturing field of taphonomy and the unique perspectives it provides to research into human origins. This important volume reveals approaches taken to the study of bone accumulations at prehistoric sites in Africa, Eurasia, and America, and provides fascinating insights into patterns produced by carnivores, by hunter-gatherers, and by our human ancestors.

Adam Wilkins draws on studies of nonhuman species, the fossil record, genetics, and molecular and developmental biology to reconstruct the evolution of the human face and its inextricable link to our species’ evolving social complexity. The neural and muscular mechanisms that allowed facial expressions also led to speech, which is unique to humans.

Late Pleistocene Deer Fossils from Corbeddu Cave

Corbeddu cave on the island of Sardinia contains Late Pleistocene sediments containing numerous fossils of a common species of deer. Evidence of human activities was also found which is unusual as a Late Pleistocene island fauna is not supposed to be asscoaited with humans, as they were supposed, until recently to have colonized islands not earlier than the Holocene. Analysis of the assemblages, presented in this study, provided detailed information about the microstratigraphy of the site, which has been reconstructed by using a newly developed computer program. The combination of all taphonomic information makes it possible to reconstruct the nature of the site formation processes and Hofmeijer argues that the assemblages cannot have been formed by natural processes alone. Indeed the Corbeddu cave differs from mainland assemblages to such an extent that the study suggests that the bones were a by product of feeding but were also used as tools.
