People don't abandon faith because they have doubts. People abandon faith because they think they're not allowed to have doubts. Even as a pastor, Austin Fischer has experienced the shadows of doubt and disillusionment. Leaning into perennial questions about Christianity, he shows that doubt is no reason to leave the faith—instead, it's an invitation to a more honest faith.

Will amazing coincidences and psychic connections prove vital; will religion divide or love conquer near fatal assaults? When ruggedly handsome Brad Carnahan saw stunningly beautiful Kerri Baldwin come into the gym, his intuition signaled a warning. Perhaps she could mean trouble. Drawn into a relationship that he initially resisted, he sensed a veil protecting her past, only to finally realize there was a shroud over his also. But neither of them could have known they would be struggling with stalking, assault, murder, an assassination attempt, their own internal battle for their faith, and ultimately fighting for life itself. These heart-rending challenges demand the ultimate resources of two strong people caught in the vortex of evil. Bound in the web of love and hope, awed by coincidences that earmark their journey, tension takes them to the breaking point. Which will triumph, the human obsessions of that aggressive evil, or the mysterious coincidences of God's providence?

Living in the Shadows of a Rich and Sick Society is a chilling reality depicting the rising level of violence among teens, increased alcohol and drug abuse, and the continuous exploitation of children, which has become a widespread phenomena that has developed into a scandalous situation in our homes, schools, communities, and that all too often ends up in many grave yards. The spiral of youth problems and issues has created challenges for our schools, the police, the courts and our neighborhoods. It is my belief that solutions to most of these problems are no longer a local matter. Our government must establish a national new team philosophy and commitment to address the physical, social, economical, psychological and technological problems of our youth in our changing world. It is my belief that the social problems of teens, youth violence, and miss education will continue to become major issues for a very long time unless some immediate and drastic actions are implemented. In spite of the advancement of technology and the achievements in education, businesses, government, and faith institution, there is no single source within our societies that is more important that is in danger than the foundation of family The day break of a new culture is at hand in which the youth culture must be taken very seriously. It is time for a cultural make over. Our civilize society can no longer wait for an early afternoon break. In a rich republic like ours, we can no longer side step our civic responsibilities of knowing that the foundation of the family is in danger. The new day is now. Tomorrow is not promised. Our civilized society can no longer wait for an early afternoon. Immediate action is need to address the black sheep attitude of this nation. Our young people are restless. They have been awakened to the misgivings of their adult counterparts. Do as I say, but not as 1 do. There is a silent revolution taking place in our youth culture of internet forums to challenge our institutions, may be for good or for evil actions. However, soon they will be no more silent in the outcome. The youth population must be taken very serious concerning their aggressive disobedience to parents, their uncaring attitudes towards their peers and civic disorder to institutions Government, both state and local jurisdictions, will need to reassert their methods in developing regional strategies and collective programs that at times will call for a national approach for an effective comprehensive solution to counteract the silent psychopathic nature that are taking hold of our society. It is quite evident from my experience of working in schools, the community and the correctional institutions that violent behavior by youth is very serious and extreme and must be corrected immediately. In times like these, someone must be able to speak about the wrongs of government without fear and limitations. The voice of the sick, lame and the poor must be represented in all chambers of society. As we look around to the greed and corruptions, the crimes, the abuse and violence we can see a decaying state of affairs crashing down with shattering forces ready to destroy the family and our learning institutions. Needless to say, most families are not equipped to keep pace with increasing technological changes that are taking place. The level of advertisement and marketing techniques have cast a double shadow in which the haves are joining the haves and the have nots. Living in the shadows of a rich and sick society is an attempt to look at the five major institutions of civilization with a spiritual vision of hope and institutional reconciliation. A vision where the institutions of the family/home, schools, places of worship, commerce and government win dream new dreams for equitable action and just resources and services, to reverse then ever ending spiral of unrest if we fail to addressing the needs of our future generation. Today, God is can

Well-known names such as Albert Einstein, Enrico Fermi, J. Robert Oppenheimer, and Edward Teller are usually those that surround the creation of the atom bomb. One name that is rarely mentioned is Leo Szilard, known in scientific circles as “father of the atom bomb.” The man who first developed the idea of harnessing energy from nuclear chain reactions, he is curiously buried with barely a trace in the history of this well-known and controversial topic. Born in Hungary and educated in Berlin, he escaped Hitler’s Germany in 1933 and that first year developed his concept of nuclear chain reactions. In order to prevent Nazi scientists from stealing his ideas, he kept his theories secret, until he and Albert Einstein pressed the US government to research atomic reactions and designed the first nuclear reactor. Though he started his career out lobbying for civilian control of atomic energy, he concluded it with founding, in 1962, the first political action committee for arms control, the Council for a Livable World. Besides his career in atomic energy, he also studied biology and sparked ideas that won others the Nobel Prize. The Salk Institute for Biological Studies in La Jolla, California, where Szilard spent his final days, was developed from his concepts to blend science and social issues.

From Out of the Shadows was the first full study of Mexican-American women in the twentieth century. Beginning with the first wave of Mexican women crossing the border early in the century, historian Vicki L. Ruiz reveals the struggles they have faced and the communities they have built. In a narrative enhanced by interviews and personal stories, she shows how from labor camps, boxcar settlements, and urban barrios, Mexican women nurtured families, worked for wages, built extended networks, and participated in community associations--efforts that helped Mexican Americans find their own place in America. She also narrates the tensions that arose between generations, as the parents tried to rein in young daughters eager to adopt American ways. Finally, the book highlights the various forms of political protest initiated by Mexican-American women, including civil rights activity and protests against the war in Vietnam. For this new edition of From Out of the Shadows, Ruiz has written an afterword that continues the story of the Mexicana experience in the United States, as well as outlines new additions to the growing field of Latina history.

Lying face down on the muddy jungle floor, with the taste of his own blood in his mouth, all Malcolm Leal could do was call upon the God of his great-grandmother. Florencia Martinez Hernandez raised Malcolm as her own son in a small fishing village on the northern coast of Cuba. Teaching Malcolm wisdom gleaned from the worn pages of her century-old Bible, Florencia spoke of a temple promised to all people and that there were men on earth who walked with God. Most importantly, she taught him to rely on her God for everything. While on assignment for the Cuban Special Forces in the dense rain forests of Central America, Malcolm suffered the fatal blow of a sniper's bullet. As he felt his life slipping away amongst the surrounding shadows, Malcolm reflected on his life and the teachings of his great-grandmother. In what he thought were his last moments, he summoned the God of his grandmother in faith. Malcolm's prayer was heard. Faith Among Shadows recounts Malcolm Leal's miraculous journey in search of truth, and his eventual discovery of and conversion to the gospel of Jesus Christ.

As one of the most noted preachers and pastors in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America for nearly 50 years, Richard Boye has seen just about everything. And readers of these messages are the fortunate beneficiaries of his experience as he shares much of what he has "learned along the way." Both clergy and laity alike will find inspiration and many ideas in these distinctive messages, which Boye describes as being "the best of me." Those who are climbing the arduous slopes of contemporary ministry will discover that Boye's wisdom, accumulated from years of service in some of the most prominent Lutheran churches in the country and always rooted in the gospel, will be a great help and comfort as they chart their own course toward the summit. Among the many outstanding sermons in this volume is one that Boye preached at the ELCA's first churchwide assembly. Richard E. Boye is a graduate of Wittenberg University and Hamma School of Theology. His pastoral career included service at congregations in Illinois, Pennsylvania, and North Carolina, and was crowned by a decade as senior pastor of Elim Lutheran Church in Robbinsdale, Minnesota, one of the ELCA's ten largest congregations. Now retired, Boye is based in Virginia, where he continues to preach and write.
