This study looks at the factors, both organisational and practical, affecting the activity and participation rates of women doctors. It is estimated that half of those entering medical schools will be women by the 1990s, and it is therefore important to assess the main influences on the careers of women doctors. Their contribution will be a key factor in future medical manpower planning and the Department of Health and Social Security, in initiating this research, recognised that it required more information on the careers of women doctors for four main purposes: 1) to be able to project more accurately the contribution women doctors will make in future towards the total supply of doctors, and, in particular, to anticipate any changes or trends in activity or participation rates; 2) to identify the main obstacles, whether institutional or domestic, which prevent women from participating as fully as they would like in medicine; 3) to improve the usefulness, accuracy and realism of careers advice in medicine at all stages from school to post-graduate training; 4) to assess the extent to which women doctors have found their aspirations limited more by the demands of the medical career system, based on the assumption of unbroken careers and full-time working, rather than by their own ambitions.

The Modernising Medical Careers (MMC) programme of work was established in 2003 to address difficulties in poor training and indifferent career prospects experienced by some doctors at Senior House Officer (SHO) level and by many of those in Staff Grade and Associate Specialist (SAS) posts. A new Foundation programme was introduced in 2005, the Specialty Training system was reformed and the SHO grade scrapped in 2007. As a result of inadequate preparation during the implementation of the reforms, in 2007 the MMC programme plunged into crisis. The new centralised recruitment system, the Medical Training Application Service (MTAS), proved highly unpopular with both candidates and assessors. A major inquiry, led by Sir John Tooke, examined the 2007 crisis and called both for major changes to the structure of training and for the creation of a new body, NHS Medical Education England, to oversee medical education. The Committee's investigation finds that a divided and inappropriate governance structure, flawed project and risk management and poor communication with junior doctors were the most serious failings. Co-ordination between the Department of Health and the Home Office on restricting medical migration was inadequate. These practical shortcomings were responsible for some of the direct causes of the 2007 crisis, including the defective application form and other aspects of the short-listing process, the unsafe computer system and the failure to limit the number of applications from overseas doctors. The leadership shown by the Department of Health was inadequate. The Chief Medical Officer chose not to take on a clear leadership role and thus did not accept responsibility for the 2007 crisis. The Committee makes a number of recommendations for change and improvement to achieve a more flexible training system, and calls on the Department to address policy issues relating to the wider medical workforce.

Tells the story of the infamous "Goat Gland Doctor" -- controversial medical charlatan, groundbreaking radio impresario, and prescient political campaigner -- and recounts his amazing rags to riches to rags career. A popular joke of the 1920s posed the question, "What's the fastest thing on four legs?" The punch line? "A goat passing Dr. Brinkley's hospital!" It seems that John R. Brinkley's virility rejuvenation cure -- transplanting goat gonads into aging men -- had taken the nation by storm. Never mind that "Doc" Brinkley's medical credentials were shaky at best and that he prescribed medication over the airwaves via his high-power radio stations. The man built an empire. The Kansas Medical Board combined with the Federal Radio Commission to revoke Brinkley's medical and radio licenses, which various courts upheld. Not to be stopped, Brinkley started a write-in campaign for Governor. He received more votes than any other candidate but lost due to invalidated and "misplaced" ballots. Brinkley's tactics, particularly the use of his radio station and personal airplane, changed political campaigning forever. Brinkley then moved his radio medical practice to Del Rio, Texas, and began operating a "border blaster" on the Mexico side of the Rio Grande. His rogue stations, XER and its successor XERA, eventually broadcast at an antenna-shattering 1,000,000 watts and were not only a haven for Brinkley's lucrative quackery, but also hosted an unprecedented number of then-unknown country musicians and other guests.

The increasing proportion of women in the medical profession has been followed keenly both by conservative and feminist observers during the past three decades. Statistics both in Europe and in the United States tend to confirm that women work mainly in niches of the health care system or medical specialties characterized by relatively low earnings or prestige. The segregation of medical work has become increasingly recognized as a sign of inequality between female and male members of the medical profession. Medicine as a social organization is not a universal structure: Health care systems vary in the extent to which physicians work in the private or public sector and in the extent to which they have as a corporate body been able to influence their numbers and the character of their work. The aim of this book is not only to review and to provide an account of women's position in medicine but also to provide an analytical framework. The text revolves around three key issues that illuminate this argument: numbers, medical practice, and feminist agendas of women physicians. The issues are addressed in all the chapters but highlighted as central analytical themes in a cross-cultural context. Challenging previous studies of the medical profession, which have assumed for the most part a gender-neutral stance, Riska's text provides a unique focus. Medical Careers and Feminist Agendas presents a comprehensive, cross-national analysis of the current status of women in three societies where the economics of medical practice vary considerably: a market society, a welfare state, and a formerly communist society in transition. Aimed at a wide audience, this book will be useful for years to come in medical sociology, the sociology of professions, and women's studies. Its historical breadth, current data, and trenchant probing will furnish practitioners and policy-makers alike with a needed analytical tool. Elianne Riska is Academy Professor of the Academy of Finland, and von Willebrand-Fahlbeck Professor of Sociology at bo Academi University, Finland. She was formerly assistant and then associate professor of sociology in the Department of Sociology and College of Human Medicine at Michigan State University. Her earlier published work includes Gender, Work, and Medicine and Gendered Moods.
