Diane spent many hours walking the paths at the zoo photographing all the animals, not only at the city zoo but also the Childrens Zoo. When the Childrens Zoo was closed many of the animals she had come to know only to meet them again when they were relocated at the city zoo. While on one of her photographic journeys to the main zoo, she happened to meet a wonderful man who was a docent, that is considered a mini-zoologist and is able to educate the visitors on facts the different animals and answer the many questions they had. After a pleasant conversation she was told she would make a good docent. The first opportunity did not begin until later that year but she volunteered and was trained as an educator in the Outback, where she educated visitors about the Red Kangaroos and eventually Bennetts Wallaby. When the docent program was finally open she signed up and began her education in the study of different species of animals, habitats, behaviors and conservation. It was because of her educational background, she was asked to become one of the docents advanced educational programs. This program gave her the opportunity to visit schools, libraries, retirement centers and a number of other establishments where she did presentations on many topics where she showed skulls, skins and replicas of the animals. She believes that hands on approach along with a visual presentation will pique the interest in the conservation of the futures of these animals. She supports many conservation organizations that bring awareness to the public about the many animals that are suffering from many dangers that are causing their numbers to sadly decrease to a level of near extinction. Zoos across the country and abroad participate in the Species Survival Program where animals that are on the brink of extinction have attempts to reproduce and keep the species alive. Dianes current position is as Director of Youth Education at the Belle Isle Aquarium in Detroit where she teaches the world of marine life and the dangers facing our oceans.

Since the first volume of The Biology of Sea Turtles was published in 1997, the field has grown and matured in ways few of the authors would have predicted—particularly in the areas of physiology, behavior, genetics, and health. Volume III presents timely coverage of emerging areas as well as the integration of approaches and information that did not exist even a decade ago. The book assembles the foremost experts in each topic to provide the most up-to-date and comprehensive book on sea turtles available today. New areas covered include in vivo imaging of structure, spatial distributions of marine turtles at sea, epibiosis, imprinting, parasitology, and climatic effects. Life history is explored in three chapters covering age determination, predator-prey interactions, and mortality from bycatch. The Biology of Sea Turtles, Volume III will inspire scientists and students to explore and expand their understanding of these intriguing animals. The book provides clear baseline summaries, thoughtful syntheses, and effective presentation of the most fundamental topics spanning form and function, health, distributions, behavior, genetics, evolution, and ecology. Its scope and depth make it the definitive go-to reference in the field.

The Turtle Lady of St. Kitts, also known as Dr. Kimberly Stetwart, is already waiting at midnight when an 800-pound leatherback sea turtle crawls awkwardly out of the Caribbean surf and on to the sandy beach. The mother turtle has a job to do, and it’s a vital one: dig a nest where she will lay eggs that will hatch into part of the next generation of leatherbacks. With only one in a thousand of the eggs for this critically endangered species producing an adult sea turtle, the odds are stacked against her and her offspring. Lying in the sand on the dark beach, Kimberly is hard at work, too: taking samples and measurements from mother turtles, counting eggs as they’re laid, and even relocating vulnerable nests. But sea turtle conservation is about more than beachcombing and observation. It also requires dedication to the turtles as well as to the communities where the nesting sites lie, and where fishing for sea turtles can provide much-needed income—and even food. Join renowned author and photographer Steve Swinburne on a journey through history to examine the rise of the leatherback and other sea turtles. Learn how they came to be endangered and how they can be saved. For the complete selection of books in this critically acclaimed, award-winning series, visit www.sciencemeetsadventure.com.

Written by two of the Southeast's foremost authorities on sea turtle conservation, this is an accessible, fully illustrated guide to the species that frequent the Atlantic and Gulf Coasts of the United States. No one who encounters a sea turtle soon forgets it. The leatherback, for instance, can grow to huge proportions, commonly approaching eight feet in length and more than half a ton in weight. Powerful swimmers, they are also among the deepest divers of all air-breathing sea creatures. Despite these assets, the survival of the leatherback, like that of all sea turtle species, is under constant threat from commercial fishing operations, overdevelopment of nesting grounds, pollution, and predation by introduced species. The guide opens with comprehensive coverage of the sea turtle's evolution, juvenile and adult life cycles, nesting, diet and feeding, disease and parasites, predators, and conservation issues. Each subsequent chapter is dedicated to a particular turtle species: loggerhead, leatherback, Kemp's ridley, green sea turtle, hawksbill, and olive ridley. The account of each species describes distribution, habitats, general appearance, life history and behavior, and conservation. For each species, photographs of hatchlings and adults and a map showing distribution and migration provide further information. Sea turtles have been swimming the seas for one hundred million years. Yet all of the species in this book—indeed, all sea turtles worldwide—are on U.S. and international endangered lists. Biologists Carol Ruckdeschel and C. Robert Shoop have dedicated their careers to learning about sea turtles—and to ensuring that we understand that we are stakeholders in the fate of these ancient creatures. With this guide in hand, readers will be better equipped to understand sea turtle biology and support sea turtle conservation efforts.

Hazel Peabody is a ten year old girl living in New York City. One very rainy day, Hazel is stuck in her apartment with her cat Casper wondering if it will ever stop raining. She decides to look at the assignment her teacher, Mrs. Lovelock has given to her class. She discovers that her class has been asked to write a paper on the loch Ness monster. Hazel thinks this a crazy thing to ask her class to write about since "everyone knows that there's no such thing as the loch Ness monster." She decides instead to take a nap. Hazel is suddenly awakened by noises coming from her closet. It sounds like water dripping. She thinks that there must be a leak in the roof and that all her clothes will be ruined. She then hears what sounds like a whistle. Like that heard on an old naval ship. Hazel looks at her cat Casper and says, "now that's really weird." Hazel finally decides to open her closet door and see what's going on. She turns the knob and suddenly the doors blows off it's hinges with a great gust of wind. She and Casper hide under her bed. The next things she sees is her next door neighbor, Mr. Peachtree, dressed as a pirate. He has a patch over one eye and a wooden peg leg where his real leg used to be. Hazel asks him what he is doing in her closet, and why he is dressed the way he is. Mr. Peachtree tells her it's all part of the adventure to find the loch Ness monster. He tells her that a ship is waiting for them to board and be on their way. Hazel is a bit hesitant, but then she hears her friends Trudy and Poo calling her to join them from inside her closet. She decides that since her friends are on board, it must be okay. With that Hazel and Casper follow Mr. Peachtree across the threshold of her closet and onto the great ship Petunia.
