“Directed by Desire . . . is a powerful addition to the entire canon of American poetry.”—Booklist Now in paperback, Directed by Desire is the definitive overview of June Jordan’s -poetry. Collecting the finest work from Jordan’s ten volumes, as well as dozens of “last poems” that were never published in Jordan’s lifetime, these more than six hundred pages overflow with intimate lyricism, elegance, fury, meditative solos, and dazzling vernacular riffs. As Adrienne Rich writes in her introduction, June Jordan “wanted her readers, listeners, students, to feel their own latent power—of the word, the deed, of their own beauty and intrinsic value.” From “These Poems”: These poems they are things that I do in the dark reaching for you whoever you are and are you ready? The cloth edition of Directed by Desire was selected as a Library Journal Poetry Book of the Year and received the Lambda Book Award for Lesbian Poetry. June Jordan taught at UC Berkeley for many years and founded Poetry for the People. Her twenty-eight books include poetry, essays, fiction, and children’s books. She was a regular columnist for The Progressive and a prolific writer whose articles appeared in The Village Voice, The New York Times, Ms. Magazine, and The Nation. After her death in 2002, a school in the San Francisco School District was renamed in her honor.

"For medieval and early modern poets, philosophers, and political subjects, to articulate desire was to stake out the boundaries of the cultural and communal self. Working in the midst of political dangers, intellectual and religious crises, and social upheavals, many medieval and Renaissance writers began appropriating discourses of desire in order to engage in, comment upon, and cope with their cultural environments. This 'translatio' of desire offers an efficient yet flexible paradigm for examining the construction of the desiring subject. This collection of new essays addresses the translation of desire across the borders of nation, language, genre, and gender. It explores how medieval and early modern authors convert discourses of desire whose conventions are primarily male, literary, and erotic into terms that serve the mixed social, religious, political, and literary aspirations of both male and female voices. The essays range in topic from gendered authority in the high medieval epistle to the eroticized politics of a Huguenot poet. Some take up cases where the primary end of desire is literary authority and others where social and political concerns drive the adaptation of desire, but even this border is permeable to translation." --

The two volumes of Architectural Theory bring together the fundamental elements of architecture and present them in a new and accessible format. The books define the areas of knowledge necessary for successful design and criticism and, for the first time in the history of architectural literature, integrate all the concepts to form a balanced and comprehensive whole. Volume One, A History of the Categories in Architecture and Philosophy, establishes the framework of architectural theory. The author presents a systematic analysis of what constitutes 'good' architecture in the West, tracing the history of architectural theory through the metaphysics of ancient Greece, the doctrines of early and medieval Christianity, up to the concepts and 'categories' of modern philosophy. The twentieth century has seen more building and more analysis of building than any other. Volume Two, Principles of Twentieth-century Architectural Theory Arranged by Category, focuses on the recent fragmentation of architectural theory into distinct doctrines. Formalism, minimalism, mannerism, functionalism, rationalism, brutalism, positivism, romanticism, expressionism, classicism, constructivism, organicism, modernism, futurism, radicalism, deconstructivism, historicism, post-modernism - each movement has influenced the shape of architectural thinking over the last century. Principles of Twentieth-century Architectural Theory Arranged by Category analyses each in turn and places each in context. The volumes are liberally illustrated with representative buildings of the period and include a glossary of terms, a thesaurus, an annotated guide to further reading as well as diagrammatic links connecting themes across both volumes. The two volumes, whether studied together or individually, will prove invaluable to students of architecture and related disciplines.
