Johan Louis Ussing was a professor of Greek and Latin at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark. His deep interest in a fifteenth century manuscript entitled Vitruvii de Architectura Libri Decem led to the eventual publication of his book Observations on Vitruvii de Architecturea Libri Decem: With Special Regard to the Time At Which This Work Was Written which is the summary of his life's work and dedication to this ancient document. Of particular note, this edition is actually a translation from the first printing in Danish, painstakingly revised by Ussing himself who wanted to widen the reach of this important work. The source document for this text, Vitruvii de Architectura Libri Decem, was written and published by Vitruvius Polio, a contemporary of Caesar and Augustus. His manuscript provides modern readers with a manual on ancient architecture and design that articulately establishes itself as an exceedingly helpful guide to understanding a variety of the preserved and admired antique structures in Italy. Vitruvious Polio is not only credited with the creation of this valuable manuscript, he was also a noted teacher of architecture in his lifetime, educating architects, scholars, and laymen on the use of and theory behind Renaissance architecture. Thanks to Ussing, Polio's legacy carries on even today as he is able to share his amassed knowledge with new generations via his original manuscript with helpful additions and interpretations from Ussing himself aimed at a more contemporary audience. Even though other manuscripts and books have steadily begun to overshadow Polio's essential work, Ussing successfully resuscitates the Vitruvii de Architectura Libri Decem in this book dedicated to Polio, his seminal manuscript, and his countless contributions to the understanding and preservation of architecture. Observations on Vitruvii de Architecturea Libri Decem: With Special Regard to the Time At Which This Work Was Written is a wonderful book for readers interested in architecture, history, and the preservation of historic structures. The book combines both notes on the life and times of Vitruvius Polio and the manuscript Polio created that was arguably his most important piece of work done artfully by author Johan Louis Ussing in a manner that appeals to both scholar and laymen with equanimity.
