Being a Christian lawyer is possible, but not easy. Law professor Michael Schutt believes that although there are significant obstacles, Christians belong in the legal profession and should regard it as a sacred calling. The Christian God is, after all, a God concerned with justice, both divine and human. However, the pathway beginning with law school and leading to the daily demands of practice doesn't provide much guidance for pursuing law as a Christian calling. Schutt offers this book as a vital resource for reconceiving the theoretical foundations of law and gives practical guidance for maintaining integrity within a challenging profession. A hopeful and practical book for law students and those serving in the legal profession.

It is legal for CEOs to make 300 times the amount of the average worker. But is this fair and just? Is it ethical for a customer to purchase a digital camera for the sole purpose of using it on a ski trip and then return the item to the store afterwards? Should companies who purchase advertising space on websites that offer pirated videos for download be held accountable for breaking intellectual property laws? The world of business is fraught with ethical challenges. Some of these are relatively straightforward, but others are complicated and require careful reflection. While there are numerous theories to help people navigate these dilemmas, the goal of this book is to provide a comprehensive biblical perspective on contemporary issues in areas such as consumer behavior, management, accounting and marketing. In Business Ethics in Biblical Perspective, Michael E. Cafferky explores the biblical resources for moral guidance and ethical consideration. He identifies twelve key themes in the narrative of Scripture: cosmic conflict, creation, holiness, covenant relationships, shalom, sabbath, justice, righteousness, truth, wisdom, loving kindness and redemption. By looking at ethical approaches and issues through this multifaceted biblical perspective, Cafferky helps readers appreciate the complex nature of ethical decision making, particularly in the context of business and finance. Designed from the start with the classroom in mind, each chapter of Business Ethics in Biblical Perspective provides example scenarios, questions for intrapersonal and interpersonal ethical reflection, review questions, ethical vignettes for discussion and an exploration of the chapter material in light of the biblical themes. Additional IVP Instructor Resources are also available.

In these challenging times, the resident population served by the predominantly African-American church demands and deserves specific attention in order to preserve the uniquely cohesive nature of the African-American community. While this work is specifically focused on one local church community, there is a shared hope among church members, clergy, civic and lay professionals, and the Samuel DeWitt Proctor School of Theology that this project will serve as a model for success beyond its local audience. This work was conceived to help mitigate growing environmental and social concerns beyond traditional emergencies--such as floods, hurricanes, tornadoes, severe weather, and power outages--imposed upon communities already strained by economic and social inequities. This book is designed to provide guidance on crisis and emergency preparedness by offering an example of how a church or similar institution may undertake the task of setting up an appropriate emergency planning structure for its congregation and community.

Essay from the year 2011 in the subject Economics - Finance, grade: Distinction, University of Warwick (School of Law), course: International Banking Regulation, language: English, abstract: The recent financial crisis of 2007-2009 (the crisis) has been dramatised as the worst crisis since the great de- pression in the 1930s. Prompt regulatory response was required in order to contain the spread of fear and stop the mistrust with the ultimate goal to restore the confidence into the financial institutions and markets as well as prevent the collapse of the real economy. Financial crises containment can be defined as the enhancement of “... soundness and stability of the banking ...” which is essential to “...ensure legal certainty and to restore confidence in financial markets” Regulators have a whole set of tools to respond to crises, using an existing regime and or implementing a special resolution regime. Latter has a broad span reaching from capital injections to expropriation. Undoubtedly, the measures raise legal questions regarding their raison d’être and liability of those exercising the measures. Moreover, the measures have individual merits and demerits varying in respect of their costs and perspective of the market participants. The purpose of this essay is to analyse these responses. Therefore, different measures will be identified and evaluated in light of the Economic and Financial Affairs Council’s common principles for action 5 and the Commission Communication of State Aid 6 which have been determined as representative guidelines for policy makers in drafting a response regime. It will be concluded that there is no clear cut answer to which are the most successful measures; nevertheless, there is empirical evidence of which are the most favoured responses by regulators. The measures will be in response to an acute crisis, ie the prevention and resolution of a crisis will not be treated in this essay. In addition, the responses will be limited to the European Union. The next chapter is dived in 5 parts exploring mechanisms to contain financial crises. It represents a sequence that has been observed in the recent crisis in Europe. Chapter 3 gives an outlook. The last chapter concludes.

The global financial crisis and subsequent sovereign debt crisis in Europe demonstrated that the relationship between law and economics in the design of the monetary system must be revisited. International monetary affairs are usually conducted via domestic monetary policies which are formulated by independent central banks and informed mainly by economics, without much room being left to substantive law. Based on the 2012 World Trade Forum, this volume brings together leading scholars, practitioners and policy makers in international economic law in order to examine the potential of law and legal methodology to contribute to international monetary stability. It explores the links between and lessons to be learnt from existing international investment and trading systems and studies some specific policy issues which have a direct impact on monetary affairs, such as exchange rate policy, sovereign debt, taxation, competitiveness, trade imbalances, austerity programmes and human rights.
