This hands-on design guide helps readers build a foundation for the development of an individual typographic sensibility by providing a brief outline of the evolution of type, an introduction to the language and terminology of type and type setting, fundamental rules and conventions of professional practice, and key decisions on type selection and page layout. More typefaces are now readily available to a wider public than at any time in the past–this book presents a basis for the confident and informed exploration of a rich and vivid medium that continues to play a fundamental role in human communication.A directory of typefaces places the major type categories and typefaces into their historical context, introducing some key examples of excellence in contemporary type design as well as identifying the fundamental values that have sustained the continued use of classic typefaces over the last 500 years of print history.A guide for aspiring designers, typographers, graphic artists, desktop publishers, and advertising production people who want to sharpen their attention to detail and develop a sensitive typographical eye.

The Novel in Anglo-German Context focuses on cross-currents and affinities between fiction written in English and fiction written in German, and the thirty-one contributors to this volume cover authors from the eighteenth century to the present day. The essays collected in this book approach the theme of Anglo-German cultural cross-fertilisation from a number of different angles. These include the reception and translation of foreign authors, the examination of exile writers, the comparative exploration of aspects which are crucial to both German, Austrian or Swiss and British or Irish novelists at a given point in time, the fictional depiction of the respective other culture, Anglo-German images in the novel, as well as the role of the novel in the curricula of German and British secondary education. The topics chosen by the contributors offer stimulating views on a wide range of subject areas, and the volume is essential reading for anyone with a broad interest in Anglo-Irish, German, Austrian and Swiss literature, the development of fiction as well as Anglo-German literary and cultural relations.

Comparative research in the area of property law is gaining importance. Against the background of the current discussion of developing model rules, aimed at facilitating European private law harmonization, and of ongoing law reform projects in a number of EU Member States, this volume addresses key issues in the field of the transfer of corporeal movable property. Authors from various European countries discuss classical issues of property law, such as the dichotomies of "consensual" versus "delivery" and "causal" versus "abstract" transfer systems, good faith acquisition, and the role of party autonomy in the field of the transfer of ownership. In addition, a special focus is given to the less well-known â?? but at least equally fundamental â?? difference between "unitary" transfer approaches, as applied in continental Europe, and the "functional" approach, as followed in Scandinavian countries. Further contributions discuss fiduciary transfers, avoidance in bankruptcy, the question of where to draw the line between obligatory and proprietary rights, the role of intellectual property rights, possession, and the EU law basis for the harmonization of property law. These contributions were presented at a conference held in Salzburg in February 2007, forming part of the activities of the working group "Transfer of Movables" within the "Study Group on a European Civil Code."

This book combines elementary theory from computer science with real-world challenges in global geodetic observation, based on examples from the Geodetic Observatory Wettzell, Germany. It starts with a step-by-step introduction to developing stable and safe scientific software to run successful software projects. The use of software toolboxes is another essential aspect that leads to the application of generative programming. An example is a generative network middleware that simplifies communication. One of the book’s main focuses is on explaining a potential strategy involving autonomous production cells for space geodetic techniques. The complete software design of a satellite laser ranging system is taken as an example. Such automated systems are then combined for global interaction using secure communication tunnels for remote access. The network of radio telescopes is used as a reference. Combined observatories form coordinated multi-agent systems and offer solutions for operational aspects of the Global Geodetic Observing System (GGOS) with regard to “Industry 4.0”.
