In the first edition (2010), Zhiqun Zhu examined the rationale and strategies of China’s new multi-directional diplomacy since the early 1990s and assessed its impact on international political economy as well as responses from the international community. This fully revised second edition is still based on extensive research addressing these and other important policy issues whilst incorporating the latest major Chinese diplomatic activities since the last edition was published. This book continues to cover Chinese initiatives in the Middle East, Latin America and the Caribbean, Africa, Central Asia, Southeast Asia and the South Pacific and studies China's current efforts to secure energy and other resources, to expand trade and investment, and to enhance 'soft power' around the world. The author further evaluates how China's activities affect these regions’ political economy and how the international community, especially the United States, has reacted to China's new diplomacy. Whilst continuing to answer some lingering questions about Chinese foreign policy and its implications for both China and the international community as they become increasingly interdependent, this paperback edition is adapted for classroom use and provides questions for discussion to help readers review the key empirical and theoretical points of each chapter.Han-Centrism and the Balance of Power in International Politics John M. Han-centrism, a virulent form of Chinese nationalism, asserts that the Han Chinese are superior to other peoples and have a legitimate right to advance Chinese interests at the expense of other countries. Han nationalists have called for policies that will allow China to reclaim the prosperity stolen by foreign powers during the “Century of Humiliation.” The growth of Chinese capabilities and Han-centrism suggests that the United States, its allies, and other countries in Asia will face an increasingly assertive China—one that thinks it possesses a right to dominate international politics. John M. Friend and Bradley A. Thayer explore the roots of the growing Han nationalist group and the implications of Chinese hypernationalism for minorities within China and for international relations. The deeply rooted chauvinism and social Darwinism underlying Han-centrism, along with China’s rapid growth, threaten the current stability of international politics, making national and international competition and conflict over security more likely. Western thinkers have yet to consider the adverse implications of a hypernationalistic China, as opposed to the policies of a pragmatic China, were it to become the world’s dominant state.March 2007 S. The third edition of Understanding Contemporary China retains all the useful features of the previous editions, but has been thoroughly updated to reflect such current issues and challenges as China?s dynamic economic growth; its changing social and political culture; its growing international presence as a mediator, investor, and disburser of foreign aid; recent developments in the standoff with Taiwan; and the ever growing impact of environmental degradation.Assuming no prior knowledge on the part of the reader, the book was designed as a core text for ?Introduction to China? courses and can also be used effectively in a variety of discipline-oriented curriculums (especially political science and sociology). Numerous maps and photographs enhance the text.China has been pursuing its national interests recently through the exercise of “soft power,” as it projects a nonconfrontational face to the developing world.

China has been pursuing its national interests recently through the exercise of “soft power,” as it projects a nonconfrontational face to the developing world. It is China's rapid economic expansion—and the country's need for natural resources, export markets, and political influence—that has led it to step up its engagement with developing countries in Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Africa, and Latin America.Extensive debate is ongoing in China regarding the source of the country's soft power and its reasons for utilizing it. It currently lacks a coordinated national soft-power strategy and views its soft power as defensive and largely reactive, a point of view intended to allay fears in other states of a Chinese threat. In the United States, also, debate is taking place about whether China's soft-power projection represents healthy competition or a strategic threat.Engaging China successfully on critical global issues such as climate change, energy, and security requires an accurate assessment of Chinese policy, exigencies, and progress in these issue areas. This new report from the CSIS Smart Power Initiative seeks to provide such an assessment, offering a multifaceted view of China's use of smart power and its implications for the United States.New York : Cornell University Press . Research on China's African engagement has increased significantly in recent years and covers a wide range of topics and issues. while much of this research has been critical of China's activities on the continent, few observers have attempted to analyse or understand China's policy towards Africa and the specific diplomatic framework (FOCAC) constructed by China to advance dialogue, problem solving and mutual benefit. FOCAC forms the central pillar in advancing China-Africa relations and is the arena for constructive diplomatic interaction. It provides the foundation for building a long-term 'win-win' China-Africa relationship. A fuller understanding of FOCAC as a mechanism for advancing such a China-Africa win-win relationship and for building positive South-South relations is required to advance the China-Africa research agenda. This monograph seeks to provide this understanding of FOCAC.Committee on International Relations . Subcommittee on Africa , Global Human

Mineral prices have risen while the economy as a whole has entered a period of slowing growth. This book reviews the increases in price across a wide range of metals commodities. In the case of steel, the most widely used industrial metal, the rise in price appears largely driven by the high prices of iron ore and steel scrap. Weak demand and increasing supply may reduce metals prices, but it is also widely believed that prices will not fall to the levels seen earlier in this decade. Consolidation of ownership of minerals companies has given them increased pricing power. Market speculation may have driven up the prices of mineral commodities. The 2000 Commodity Futures Modernization Act exempted both energy commodities and metals from regulation by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC). This book examines in detail the relationship between prices, production, and availability of selected metal minerals essential to the U.S. economy.
