John Goff wrote for people of all reasonings--historians, linguists, anthropologists, geographers, cartographers, folklorists, and those ubiquitous intelligent readers. Comprising one of the most informative and appealing contributions to the study of toponymy, his short studies have never before been widely available. Placenames of Georgia brings together the sketches that appeared in the Georgia Mineral Newsletter and other longer articles so that all interested in Georgia and the Southeast can share Professor Goff's intimate knowledge of the history and geography of his state and region, his linguistic rigor, and his appreciation of the folklore surrounding many of Georgia's names.Born in 1840, this resident of Cherokee County, Ga, enlisted as a Private 9 July

This reference book provides information on 24,000 Confederate soldiers killed, wounded, captured or missing at the Battle of Gettysburg. Casualties are listed by state and unit, in many cases with specifics regarding wounds, circumstances of casualty, military service, genealogy and physical descriptions. Detailed casualty statistics are given in tables for each company, battalion and regiment, along with brief organizational information for many units. Appendices cover Confederate and Union hospitals that treated Southern wounded and Federal prisons where captured Confederates were interned after the battle. Original burial locations are provided for many Confederate dead, along with a record of disinterments in 1871 and burial locations in three of the larger cemeteries where remains were reinterred. A complete name index is included.Dragging Canoe, early Cherokee leader, 4; chief of Chickamauga Indians, 56. ...

First published in 1956, this book traces the progress of the Cherokee people, beginning with their native social and political establishments, and gradually unfurling to include their assimilation into “white civilization.” Henry Thompson Malone deals mainly with the social developments of the Cherokees, analyzing the processes by which they became one of the most civilized Native American tribes. He discusses the work of missionaries, changes in social customs, government, education, language, and the bilingual newspaper The Cherokee Phoenix. The book explains how the Cherokees developed their own hybrid culture in the mountainous areas of the South by inevitably following in the white man's footsteps while simultaneously holding onto the influences of their ancestors.( Prior to 1964 , definition excludes Portage County , Ohio ) Albany , Ga . ...

"In 1801 the Moravians, a Pietist German-speaking group from Central Europe, founded the Springplace Mission at a site in present-day northwestern Georgia. The Moravians remained among the Cherokees for more than thirty years, longer than any other Christian group. John and Anna Rosina Gambold served at the mission from 1805 until Anna's death in 1821. The principal author of the diaries, Anna, chronicles the intimate details of Cherokee daily life. This edition of the diary includes the entire text in translation as well as a critical apparatus, contextual introductory material, and extensive notes. Rowena McClinton's translation from German script, an archaic writing convention, makes these primary eyewitness accounts available in English for the first time. These diaries will be of immense value for understanding Cherokee culture and history during the early nineteenth century and missionary efforts in the South during this time. McClinton gained unlimited access to the diaries and other supporting documents for the completion of this project, published with the consent of the Moravian Church of the Southern Province. Volume 1 includes diary entries from 1805-13, a preface, and an introduction. Volume 2 includes diary entries from 1814-21, the editor's epilogue, and a names index and a subject index for both volumes." -- Publisher's descriptionBuncombe Monmouthshire ( 1 ) Same GEORGIA - - Total ( 60 ) Elbert County ( 4 )
