Research has been in progress since July 1970 to determine which geophysical and remote-sensing methods offer the most promising results for detecting subsurface cavities and what might be done to further develop them. Through extensive field tests, it has been determined that none of the standard electrical resistivity procedures give consistently good results. As a result of the initial field testing, a new process of data interpretation has been developed for one specific electrode configuration. Cavities less than 10 feet in diameter and at the depths greater than 100 feet were located. Research is continuing to adapt this process for locating water- or mud-filled cavities.

Acid drainage produced by abandoned coal mines continues to cause serious water pollution problems. Without knowing the exact location of the concealed openings and the extent of the mine, source abatement techniques are virtually impossible. Drilling is the only known method for accurately determining the location and extent of the mine voids, but this is extremely expensive. This project attacks the problem through field studies of the following geophysical methods: electrical resistivity, self-potential, infrared radiometry, total field and differential magnetometry, seismic refraction and reflection, very low frequency electromagnetic and induced polarization over well-documented, drift, coal mines. Airborne infrared radiometry proved to be an excellent tool for detecting and mapping acid mine/fresh water sources, acid mine/fresh water drainage, and fracture traces under selected conditions.

Results are presented of an effort directed toward the improvement of geophysical data acquisition, processing, and interpretation. Much of the discussion centers around the adaptation of existing or the development of new computer programs and their methodologies for processing and interpreting data acquired from electrical resistivity, microgravity, and seismic methods. Three programs for processing and interpreting electrical resistivity are discussed: (a) RESDIR computes the apparent resistivity as a function of electrode spacing for a given model of vertical subsurface resistivity variations; (b) RESINV calculates the model of vertical subsurface resistivity variation given the apparent resistivities acquired in the field; and (c) RESDAT is a general purpose resistivity program which handles data acquired from horizontal profiling and vertical sounding surveys. Three programs used in conjunction with microgravity surveys are documented: (a) TIDES computes the theoretical variation in gravity caused by earth tides at any location; (b) TALGRAD calculates gravity and gravity-gradient profiles across two-dimensional subsurface models; and (c) HILBERT computes the Hilbert transform which is used to determine the vertical velocity gradient. Two gravity methodologies presented describe: (a) a technique which reduces errors in microgravity surveying through use of optimal gravity station schemes, and (b) the use of polynomial surface fitting for determination of the required field component from a set of data.

In this study, three surface geophysical methods were applied to the problem of detecting and delineating subsurface cavities. An acoustic resonance technique was used at the Medford Cave test site in Florida where there are numerous shallow air-filled solution cavities in limestone. Sonar and self-potential (SP) methods were used at the Manatee Springs test site in Florida where water-filled solution cavities are found at a depth of 90 ft below the ground surface. The apparatus and techniques used are described in this report.
