This book presents a comprehensive survey in which internationally recognized experts discuss specific topics. Physiological and biophysical foundations of hemodynamics are reviewed and clinical tools to evaluate these newer parameters are described. Monitoring strategies integrating theoretical and practical aspects of hemodynamics in commonly encountered ICU conditions are presented. This Update represents the series' continuous effort to combine the most recent developments in one reference source for all those involved in cardiology, internal medicine, pediatrics, anesthesia, intensive care and emergency medicine.Biomed Eng 9:410–416 Light H, Cross G (1972) Cardiovascular data by

The anesthetist-computer interface tends to be a problem for the utilization of computer systems for anesthesia. Ergonomic interface design with an emphasis on the coherency of the interface's static and dynamic structure may improve this situation. To investigate this proposition we developed an Anesthesia Information System (AIS) with a touch-sensitive monitor as the hardware-user interface. Basic data input and system control techniques were defined and implemented. Record keeping is integrated into the user interface. Ventilator control from the same interface is an additional feature for laboratory simulations. The system is being evaluated using a technique that simulates live operations. This book comprises a collection of papers directed towards improving the management of day-case patients presenting both the anaesthetist's and surgeon's point of view regarding anaesthetic agents and analgesics and ways of reducing post-anaesthetic morbidity. Contributions from psychopharmacologists consider the effects of premedication, analgesics and anaesthetic agents on memory, psychomotor and intellectual function and draw attention to the use of tests, particularly in the assessment of post- operative sedation.Accurate, automated, continuously displayed pulmonary artery pressure
