For people who love dogs and New York, this is a visual celebration of the vibrant dog community of New York City, CANINES OF NEW YORK collects more than 500 photographs taken by acclaimed Brooklyn-based photographer Heather Weston in every borough of this dog-loving city. Heather’s talent for capturing the individual personalities of these urban pooches is rivaled only by her ability to convey the essence of a dog’s life in the city, from canine commuters riding the Staten Island Ferry to regulars meeting at a Soho dog park to working dogs with jobs in the city. New York enjoys a well-deserved reputation as a dog-friendly town, and this eclectic and adorable pack of metropolitan mutts will please fans of both dogs and the city. Each dog is presented in one or more photographic portraits, with name, breed, and occasional comments from the dog’s human companion.

It's hard to imagine eight million people trying to avoid dog refuse on the streets of New York City on a daily basis. Likewise, it's harder not to imagine New Yorkers from all walks of life picking up after their canines. Using plastic bags or trendy, mechanized devices, pet owners have become a unified force in cleaning up the sidewalks of the Big Apple. Not long ago, picking up after your Poodle, Puli, or Pekinese was not a basic civic duty. Initially, many politicians thought the idea was absurd. Animal rights activists were unanimously opposed. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals condemned the proposed legislation because it would impose undue hardship on dog owners. New York's Poop Scoop Law chronicles the integration of dog owners, a much-maligned subculture, into mainstream society by tracing the history of the legislation that the York's City Council shelved twice before, then Mayor Ed Koch was forced to go to the state level for support. Brandow shows how a combination of science and politics, fact and fear, altruism and self-interest led to the adoption and enforcement of legislation that became a shining success.

A beautiful, heartfelt, funny, and inspiring collection of photos and stories that maps the relationship between canine New Yorkers and their human counterparts. New York is a city of five boroughs, more than 250 distinct neighborhoods, 8.5 million people, and more than 600,000 dogs, who are as much a part of the social fabric as the people who follow them on the other end of the leash. City of Dogs maps this relationship with incredible four-color photos highlighting the scene. From the Bronx to Brooklyn and along the streets of Harlem and Manhattan, Ken Foster and Traer Scott explore the unique relationships between dogs and their human counterparts. We meet Alex Nuckel, living on disability and finding joy and purpose in caring for his two pit bulls, Lucy and Rocky. And Majora Carter, a community activist who has received a MacArthur grant, living and working with two stray shepherds she rescued in her own neighborhood. City of Dogs also takes us to a Midtown Manhattan law office, where staff are encouraged to bring their adopted dogs to work, and to the JFK airport, where we meet dogs who help screen at security. And then on to Brooklyn, where we meet award-winning author Jacqueline Woodson and her dogs, Toffee and Shadow. These are just a few of the amazing animals and their people featured in this perfect gift book for any dog lover.

The first canine guidebook guaranteed to make city living or visiting more fun for dogs & their owners. Inspired by "the guilts" whenever she had to leave her golden retriever, "Jack" (the book's namesake), Rohman spent a year "trying to take him almost everywhere," finding ways to make the most of New York -- with her pet. The result is an invaluable compendium of dog friendly stores, hotels, restaurants, parks, transportation, wonderful walks & special activities. Also features practical information on local dog laws, kennels, walkers, groomers, trainers, vets & emergency services. Covers Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, Bronx & Staten Island. "Every city should have such a complete guide to its canine haunts."--DOG WORLD. "Enjoying the Big Apple with a canine buddy is easier with publication of this delightful guidebook."--WALL STREET JOURNAL. "Canines can visit a surprising number of New York's shops. F.A.O. Schwarz, for example, lets dogs down its aisles provided they don't bark at the stuffed animals."--NEW YORK TIMES. Available through Baker & Taylor, Bookazine, Koen or publisher (212) 332-0799.

Pounding the pavements of downtown Manhattan for twenty years and always on the move, a gnarly, scruffy-faced dog walker took time at the end of each day to keep a journal. Emptying his pockets of notes hastily scrawled on scraps of paper, matchbook covers, napkins, Chinese menus, leaves-whatever he could grab to record fleeting impressions while in transit-slowly he transcribed every detail, compiling this delightful tale about the dogs of average New Yorkers, the rich and famous, or just plain rich. Woven with endearing accounts of the antics of his canine wards, this meandering stroll is as much about their humans. A voyeuristic look into the private lives of clients, an urban navigation manual, a playful social critique-all is exposed from this unique sidewalk perspective. A walk-and-tell story. The Nanny Diaries of a New York dog walker.
