Conquer your fear of flour with a cookbook that “takes the intimidation factor out of baking with easy-to-follow recipes” (Publishers Weekly). Warren Brown, the founder of CakeLove bakeries, wants you to bake your cake and eat it too—and even better, enjoy the moment in which you present your made-from-scratch masterpiece to bedazzled, hungry-eyed family and friends. For Brown, love and baking are inseparable. After all, he abandoned an unrewarding career in law to do the work he finds truly emotionally satisfying. Every page of CakeLove communicates that satisfaction, as well as Brown’s can-do approach to the art of baking. As he points out, baking cakes isn’t a cakewalk, but it’s not rocket science, either—and getting it right isn’t nearly as hard as you think. With an “entertaining” style (Publisher Weekly), gentle guidance, and clear information on ingredients, equipment, and techniques, CakeLove teaches you how to make pound cakes, butter cakes, sponge cakes, cupcakes, glazes, frostings, fillings, meringues, and more!

This tour of classic and curious cakes from all fifty states is “a sweet home-baked slice of Americana” (Publishers Weekly). In order to form a more perfect union of flour, eggs, butter, and sugar, CakeLove author Warren Brown offers his unique take on dessert recipes from all fifty states, plus Puerto Rico and Washington, DC. Starting his tour with the classic Baked Alaska, Brown explores America’s rich culinary history while updating regional treats like Louisiana King Cake, South Carolina’s Lady Baltimore Cake, and Florida’s Key Lime Pie. There are official state desserts, like Maryland’s Smith Island Cake and Massachusetts’ Boston Cream Pie, as well as unofficial favorites, like New York–style Cheesecake and St. Louis Gooey Butter Cake. Brown also includes more adventurous confections like Michigan’s Chocolate Sauerkraut Cake, and brand-new treats he’s created in honor of specific states, such as his California-inspired Avocado Cupcakes. With mouth-watering photos, informative sidebars, and an entire section devoted to the magic of buttercream frosting, United Cakes of America “is a shoe-in [sic] for that coveted guest-of-honor space on your baking shelf” (LA Weekly).

Let Me Eat Cake

Few creations are more associated with joy or more symbolic of the sweet life than cake. After all, it is so much more than dessert. As a book about cake would demand, this one is a multilayered, amply frosted, delicious concoction with a slice (or more) for everyone. Let Me Eat Cake is not a book about baking cake, but about eating it. Author Leslie F. Miller embarks on a journey (not a journey cake, although it's in there) into the moist white underbelly of the cake world. She visits factories and local bakeries and wedding cake boutiques. She interviews famous chefs like Duff Goldman of Food Network's Ace of Cakes and less famous ones like Roland Winbeckler, who sculpts life-size human figures out of hundreds of pounds of pound cake and buttercream frosting. She takes decorating classes, shares recipes, and samples the best cakes and the worst. The book is held together by the hero on a quest, one that traces cake history and tradition. If we were to bake a cake to celebrate the birth of cake (cake is an Old Norse word, first used around 1230), it is hard to say how many candles would go on top. Though the meaning of the word (originally "lump of something"), not to mention our expectations of its ingredients, has changed over time, we now celebrate cake as the coming together of flour, sugar, butter, eggs, vanilla, baking powder, and a pinch of salt. And what a celebration. Baking a cake is hard work, but tasting it is pure pleasure. So put on some elastic-waist pants and grab a fork.

Offers those who care for others and the planet a way to stay engaged, hopeful, balanced, and healthy when dealing with hardship, suffering, and trauma • Deepens readers’ understanding of the many ways they and their organizations may be impacted by dealing with trauma and suffering • Uses moving first-person interviews and even cartoons to illuminate the idea of trauma stewardship Working to make the world a more hopeful and sustainable place often means having to confront pain, suffering, crisis, and trauma head-on, day in and day out. Over months and years this takes an enormous emotional, psychological, and physical toll, one that we’re often not even fully aware of until the day we feel like we just can’t go on anymore. And our well-being and the work we’re doing are too important to risk that happening. This book is for all those who notice that they are not the people they once were or who are being told that by their families, friends, colleagues, or pets. Laura van Dernoot Lipsky takes a deep and sympathetic look at the many ways the stress of dealing with trauma manifests itself: feelings of helplessness and hopelessness, diminished creativity, chronic exhaustion, cynicism, and a dozen more. To keep from being overwhelmed, we need to respond to suffering in a thoughtful, intentional way—not by hardening our hearts or by internalizing others’ struggles as our own but by developing a quality of compassionate presence. This is trauma stewardship. To help achieve this, Lipsky offers a variety of simple and profound practices, drawn from modern psychology and a range of spiritual traditions, that enable us to look carefully at our reactions and motivations and discover new sources of energy and renewal. She includes interviews with successful trauma stewards from different walks of life and even uses New Yorker cartoons to illustrate her points. “We can do meaningful work in a way that works for us and for those we serve,” Lipsky writes. “Taking care of ourselves while taking care of others allows us to contribute to our societies with such impact that we will leave a legacy informed by our deepest wisdom and greatest gifts instead of burdened by our struggles and despair.”

Look forward to seeing a book like this for each state! This book is designed to help those people allergic to gluten (wheat, barley, oats, rye and malt). I have structured this book with lists of gluten-free grocery stores, gluten-free health food stores, gluten-free supermarkets, gluten-free restaurants, and gluten-free bakeries in the whole state. Not to mention gluten-free drugs and medications are listed in this book. With this being resource book, it may seem hard to imagine when you will actually use it. However, let's say your family is on vacation and you don't know which grocery store has gluten-free items. You open the book, turn to gluten-free groceries stores, and find the one closest to you. Perhaps you travel for business and you need to find a restaurant to have your meeting, but one of your clients is allergic to gluten. Grab the book and now you have choices!
