In CakeLove in the Morning, Warren Brown, founder of the CakeLove bakeries, covers it all: pancakes and French toast, frittatas and omelets, quick breads and cereals, bacon and biscuits. Explaining the basics and adding his own trademark twists on classic recipes, he shows how to make Coconut Waffles with Bananas Foster topping, Breakfast Lasagna, Multigrain Rum Raisin Scones, and much more. I created this recipe on the fly during an early-morning television shoot
chronicling my adventures in baking. The producer asked me to create
something special. Happy to oblige, I went for a flavor that I was craving that morning: espresso.

Conquer your fear of flour with a cookbook that “takes the intimidation factor out of baking with easy-to-follow recipes” (Publishers Weekly). Warren Brown, the founder of CakeLove bakeries, wants you to bake your cake and eat it too—and even better, enjoy the moment in which you present your made-from-scratch masterpiece to bedazzled, hungry-eyed family and friends. For Brown, love and baking are inseparable. After all, he abandoned an unrewarding career in law to do the work he finds truly emotionally satisfying. Every page of CakeLove communicates that satisfaction, as well as Brown’s can-do approach to the art of baking. As he points out, baking cakes isn’t a cakewalk, but it’s not rocket science, either—and getting it right isn’t nearly as hard as you think. With an “entertaining” style (Publisher Weekly), gentle guidance, and clear information on ingredients, equipment, and techniques, CakeLove teaches you how to make pound cakes, butter cakes, sponge cakes, cupcakes, glazes, frostings, fillings, meringues, and more!
More than frosting filled those cakes... Wilma Sue seems destined to go from one foster home to the next—until she is sent to live with sisters and missionaries, Ruth and Naomi. Do they really care about Wilma Sue, or are they just looking for a Cinderella-style farmhand to help raise chickens and bake cakes? As Wilma Sue adjusts to her new surroundings and helps deliver “special” cakes, Wilma Sue realizes there’s something strange going on. She starts looking for secret ingredients, and along the way she makes a new friend, Penny. When Penny and her mother hit a rough patch, Naomi decides to make her own version of cake—with disastrous results. Then tragedy strikes the chickens, and all fingers point to Wilma Sue—just when she was starting to believe she could at last find a permanent home with Ruth and Naomi. Will the sisters turn her out, or will she discover what it feels like to be truly loved?

Sweet Envy is an old-fashioned sweet parlour, cake shop and bakehouse rolled into one destination of deliciousness in Hobart, Tasmania, and run by acclaimed pastry-chef Alistair Wise and his wife and business partner Teena. The recipes in this book are a snapshot -- a slice in time -- of the expert artisan produce of Sweet Envy: from pork & harissa sausage rolls and sticky pecan buns, to the perfect croissant, or a seriously haute-couture cake with lashings of buttery icing. Within these pages are over one hundred fabulous recipes for pastries, both savoury and sweet, desserts, tarts, old-fashioned sweets, biscuits, cupcakes, gorgeous celebration cakes and ice cream to drool over (you'll want to lick the page, seriously). The authors have worked in some of the most prestigious pastry kitchens and restaurants in the world, so these recipes are packed with the ancient wisdoms of professional pastry-chef experience. As well as this, their hilarious anecdotes and wry observations of community life among Hobart's farmers, foodies and friends, provide a refreshing and somewhat anarchic sense of humour not usually associated with the sweet art of baking.

African-American women's texts, she demonstrates, often dramatize their distrust of their readers, their lack of faith in "the cultural conversation," through strategies of self-silencing and "self-talk." At the same time, she argues, the homoerotics of women's writing has too often gone unremarked. Not only does longing for an ideal listener draw women's texts into a romance with the reader, but there is an erotic excess which is part of feminist critical recuperation, itself.
