From Allis-Chalmers to Vickers, here is an A-Z of tractors made in Britain between 1945 and 1965, written by a universally acknowledged expert in the subject, whose work has been widely published in books and magazines. British Tractors deals with the products of not only British manufacturers such as David Brown, Ferguson and Nuffield, but also the American makers who established plants in Britain to overcome postwar import restrictions, which included International Harvester, Massey-Harris and Minneapolis-Moline. Demand for tractors after the War was insatiable, and the period covered saw extraordinary growth in production and innovation in design. The text is illustrated exclusively with images - some 400 in all - from the manufacturers' sales brochures and publicity material, giving a unique flavour of the times and an impression of the features the manufacturers were highlighting in the promotion of their tractors.

In this historical overview, the author documents the development of the indigenous tractor industry, from the McDonald Imperial of 1909 to more recent cane, olive, and grape harvesters. Steam, and then cumbersome motor, tractors existed in small numbers before 1914, after which the need to produce more foods using less horse and man power saw the origins of the machine we know today. Thanks to mass production, Ford brought the price down to suit average farmers, and in the 1920s to 1940s numerous rivals brought in such novelties as diesel engines, pneumatic tyres, hydraulic implement lifts and even cost-effective all-wheel drive and weather protection. After the Second World-War, a strong new indigenous tractor industry was led by Ferguson, David Brown, Nuffield and Ford. This book highlights these developments and goes on to show the dramatic improvements of the 1950s and 1960s.

Because of the exceptionally high proportion of imports in Britain’s food supply and the determined efforts of the enemy to sever the supply lines, efficient management of food resources was an essential element in the British national war effort. This volume was the first comprehensive study of this vital aspect of government strategy and fills a gap in the historiography of this period. This volume provides a balanced picture by drawing together the diverse elements that went into food policy: economic and social trends, international trade relations and labour issues. The author also traces the evolution of food policy during the pre-war planning period and the early part of the war, and analyses the roles of the United States and the labour organizations.

The first general-purpose tractor with narrowly spaced front wheels, the original Farmall was designed to do fine-tuned field cultivation as well as anything a team of farm horses could do—in short, to “farm all.” The rest is history, even legend, in the agriculture industry—a legend that unfolds in these pages in full color and sharp detail. This big book features five hundred photographs of Farmall tractors, from that first experimental model introduced in 1924, through the classic lineup of International Harvester models that bore the Farmall name, to the last one to roll off the assembly line (the landmark five-millionth tractor produced at the Farmall plant in Illinois). Detailed descriptions combine with these vibrant pictures to make Legendary Farmall Tractors a full-scale appreciation of the art of farm machinery at its can-do best.
