This book is an autobiography concerning my own personal experiences and impressions in the Military Service during the War Years (1942 to 1945). I was a non-combatant soldier in the First Army with the 45th Evacuation Hospital Semi-Mobile. I served as a Medical Laboratory Technician. The 45th actively entered the European conflict on D+ 10 and took part in every major First Army engagement from that day until V -E Day. The following were the highlights of my active duty: Omaha Beach and the Hedgerows of Normandy. Discharge at Fort Dix, New Jersey During the initial landing on Omaha Beach until the St. Lo Breakthrough we had very limited knowledge concerning our exact geographic location. What little we learned was from troops on the move, patients and the "Stars and Stripes" paper, which we received sporadically. It was not until the St. Lo breakthrough that we learned the Beachhead was a very, very narrow strip of land. The front lines were only a few miles away and never more than ten miles from our tent hospital at any time before the breakout from the hedgerow countries in Normandy. My story begins with complications on being drafted and ends with my discharge from the Army immediately after V-E Day.

Captain John A. Moktadier graduated and received his Bachelor's Degree from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, Florida. He has been flying for the past 35 years and currently holds both a Gold Seal Flight Instructor and Advanced Ground Instructor licenses from the FAA. Capt. Moktadier has four type ratings which include: Airbus 330, Airbus 320, Boeing 747 and Boeing 727. He has logged over 24,000 hours flight time with the majority of his hours in jet transport and wide body aircraft. He has flown around the world. Captain Moktadier served as a Boeing 727 Check Airman (TRE) and conducted rating rides, proficiency checks, instructions and simulator checks and line checks for over 10 years with a commercial airline in the United States. He has trained hundreds of pilots with no failures and well above average results. The pilots he has trained have lots of respect for Capt. Moktadier's knowledge and his training style made them feel relaxed during the entire simulator session maximizing their learning due to his teaching ability, honesty and integrity. They have all commented that he is a true professional instructor and TRE. This is his second book that he has published. The first one was Boeing 727 Flight Master which received many outstanding and excellent reviews and positive feedback from the professionals in the airline industry who read the book and it soon became one of the best training books on a Boeing 727.
The flaps of the B727 have a dominant effect on the character of the trailed wake vortex. The clean wing produces a strong, concentrated vortex. As the flaps are lowered, the vortex system becomes more diffuse.
A series of flight tests were performed to evaluate the vortex wake characteristics of a Boeing 727 (B727-200) aircraft during conventional and two-segment ILS approaches. Twelve flights of the B727, equipped with smoke generators for vortex marking, were flown wherein its vortex wake was intentionally encountered by a Lear Jet model 23 (LR-23) or a Piper Twin Comanche (PA-30); and its vortex location during landing approach was measured using a system of photo-theodolites. The tests showed that at a given separation distance there were no readily apparent differences in the upsets resulting from deliberate vortex encounters during the two types of approaches. Timed mappings of the position of the landing configuration vortices showed that they tended to descend approximately 91 meters (300 feet) below the flight path of the B727. Pilot opinion and roll acceleration data indicate that 4.5 nautical miles would be a minimum separation distance at which roll control could be maintained during parallel encounters of the B727's landing configuration wake by small aircraft. This minimum separation distance is generally in scale with results determined from previous tests of other aircraft using the same roll control criteria. (Author).

United Airlines has developed and evaluated a two-segment noise abatement approach procedure for use on Boeing 727 aircraft in air carrier service. In a flight simulator, the two-segment approach was studied in detail and a profile and procedures were developed. Equipment adaptable to contemporary avionics and navigation systems was designed and manufactured by Collins Radio Company and was installed and evaluated in B-727-200 aircraft. The equipment, profile, and procedures were evaluated out of revenue service by pilots representing government agencies, airlines, airframe manufacturers, and professional pilot associations. A system was then placed into scheduled airline service for six months during which 555 two-segment approaches were flown at three airports by 55 airline pilots. The system was determined to be safe, easy to fly, and compatible with the airline operational environment.
This study evaluated the performance of the Microwave Landing System (MLS) math model by comparing the results of the model's simulation errors along a flightpath with actual flight check measurements.
