This book is an autobiography concerning my own personal experiences and impressions in the Military Service during the War Years (1942 to 1945). I was a non-combatant soldier in the First Army with the 45th Evacuation Hospital Semi-Mobile. I served as a Medical Laboratory Technician. The 45th actively entered the European conflict on D+ 10 and took part in every major First Army engagement from that day until V -E Day. The following were the highlights of my active duty: Omaha Beach and the Hedgerows of Normandy. The Breakthrough at St. Lo - Operation "Cobra" The Falaise Gap - General Patton's Third Army enters the conflict The Battle of the Bulge The Crossing of the Rhine River at Remagen The 45th Evacuation Hospital's part in the repatriation of Prisoners at Buchenwald Concentration Camp Also included are my experiences during: Basic Training and Technical School. Tennessee Maneuvers Boat Trip on the "Aquitania" to Britain. Life in Britain before D-Day Point System qualification for discharge Train Trip from Germany to "Camp Lucky Strike" in France Boat trip home on a "Liberty Ship". Discharge at Fort Dix, New Jersey During the initial landing on Omaha Beach until the St. Lo Breakthrough we had very limited knowledge concerning our exact geographic location. What little we learned was from troops on the move, patients and the "Stars and Stripes" paper, which we received sporadically. It was not until the St. Lo breakthrough that we learned the Beachhead was a very, very narrow strip of land. The front lines were only a few miles away and never more than ten miles from our tent hospital at any time before the breakout from the hedgerow countries in Normandy. My story begins with complications on being drafted and ends with my discharge from the Army immediately after V-E Day.

Moktadier has four type ratings which include: Airbus 330, Airbus 320, Boeing 747 and Boeing 727. He has logged over 24,000 hours flight time with the majority of his hours in jet transport and wide body aircraft. He has flown around the world. Captain Moktadier served as a Boeing 727 Check Airman (TRE) and conducted rating rides, proficiency checks, instructions and simulator checks and line checks for over 10 years with a commercial airline in the United States. He has trained hundreds of pilots with no failures and well above average results. The pilots he has trained have lots of respect for Capt. Moktadier's knowledge and his training style made them feel relaxed during the entire simulator session maximizing their learning due to his teaching ability, honesty and integrity. They have all commented that he is a true professional instructor and TRE. This is his second book that he has published. The first one was Boeing 727 Flight Master which received many outstanding and excellent reviews and positive feedback from the professionals in the airline industry who read the book and it soon became one of the best training books on a Boeing 727.

A series of flight tests were performed to evaluate the vortex wake characteristics of a Boeing 727 (B727-200) aircraft during conventional and two-segment ILS approaches. Twelve flights of the B727, equipped with smoke generators for vortex marking, were flown wherein its vortex wake was intentionally encountered by a Lear Jet model 23 (LR-23) or a Piper Twin Comanche (PA-30); and its vortex location during landing approach was measured using a system of photo-theodolites. The tests showed that at a given separation distance there were no readily apparent differences in the upsets resulting from deliberate vortex encounters during the two types of approaches. Timed mappings of the position of the landing configuration vortices showed that they tended to descend approximately 91 meters (300 feet) below the flight path of the B727. The flaps of the B727 have a dominant effect on the character of the trailed wake vortex. The clean wing produces a strong, concentrated vortex. As the flaps are lowered, the vortex system becomes more diffuse. Pilot opinion and roll acceleration data indicate that 4.5 nautical miles would be a minimum separation distance at which roll control could be maintained during parallel encounters of the B727's landing configuration wake by small aircraft. This minimum separation distance is generally in scale with results determined from previous tests of other aircraft using the same roll control criteria. (Author).

United Airlines has developed and evaluated a two-segment noise abatement approach procedure for use on Boeing 727 aircraft in air carrier service. In a flight simulator, the two-segment approach was studied in detail and a profile and procedures were developed. Equipment adaptable to contemporary avionics and navigation systems was designed and manufactured by Collins Radio Company and was installed and evaluated in B-727-200 aircraft. The equipment, profile, and procedures were evaluated out of revenue service by pilots representing government agencies, airlines, airframe manufacturers, and professional pilot associations. A system was then placed into scheduled airline service for six months during which 555 two-segment approaches were flown at three airports by 55 airline pilots. The system was determined to be safe, easy to fly, and compatible with the airline operational environment.

March 8, 1990: An intoxicated three-man crew, including Flight Engineer Joseph Balzer, fly a Northwest Airlines Boeing 727 with 91 passengers aboard from Fargo, North Dakota to Minneapolis, Minnesota.Northwest Airlines, alcoholism July 25, 1990: All three pilots stand trial for flying a commercial airliner while under the influence of alcohol; all three are convicted and sent to federal prison. July 26, 1990 – present: Joe Balzer fights for redemption and to regain all that he has lost. Flying Drunk is his story. Since he was a young boy, Joe Balzer dreamed of flying. He pursued his goal with a vigorous passion and earned his pilot licenses, piling up hours of flight time with a wide variety of planes and jets with one overarching goal: to one day fly for a major airline. But Joe had a problem. He was an alcoholic and refused to admit to himself that he had a problem. His alcoholism caught up with him in March 1990, when Joe was arrested with two other pilots for flying a commercial airliner while under the influence of alcohol. His world began crumbling around him and his new marriage faced the ultimate test. He lost his promising career and his dignity. Every major media outlet, including The New York Times, Newsweek, and Time Magazine covered the shocking story for the stunned American flying public. The trial that followed drained Joe’s life’s savings and federal prison nearly broke him. Flying Drunk is Joe’s bittersweet and thoroughly chilling memoir of his twisted journey to a Federal courtroom, his time in the notorious Federal penitentiary system in Atlanta, and his struggle to recapture all that he held dear. Today, Joe is a recovering alcoholic, celebrating more than nineteen years of sobriety. The long road back from perdition led him to American Airlines, where good people and a great organization recognized a talented pilot who had cleaned up his act and was ready to fly again, safely. Flying Drunk is an incredible journey of the human spirit, from childhood to hell, and back again. Everyone should read and heed its message of hope and redemption. No one who does will ever forget it. About the Author: Joe Balzer is a pilot for American Airlines with more than 15,000 hours of flight experience. He has a Master’s Degree in Aerospace Education and is also an inspirational speaker, traveling around the country speaking to pilots and other groups on the dangers of alcohol and other addictions, bringing his audience to laughter and tears with his powerful message of hope. Joe lives in Tennessee with his wife Deborah and their two children. Flying Drunk is his first book.

‘A witty, sometimes heart-stopping, and always engrossing path from “boy pilot” to elite aviator.’ – Jaundiced Eye columnist, William Saunderson-Meyer Robert Schapiro always wanted to fly. Challenging anti-Semitic bullying, mockery and fierce rivalry, he realised his dream by earning his wings in the South African Air Force and going on to command C-47 Dakotas in the Border War. He joined South African Airways (SAA) in 1979, soon learning it was a time when SAA crews were dominated by the ‘Royal Family’ – captains who thought themselves above the rules and who spent time overseas on drinking binges or coaxing air hostesses to be their ‘airline wives’. When sanctions forced SAA to cut back on its routes, he was seconded to Japan’s Nippon Cargo Airlines, routinely flying between New York and Tokyo and grappling with often-hilarious cultural misunderstandings as he adapted to a Japanese style of operations. Schapiro is disarmingly frank about life as an international pilot. He divulges near misses, emergency landings, navigation errors, passenger shenanigans (seat sex, anyone?), how pilots control rowdy travellers and absorbing detail about the technique of flying different aircraft types. Uplifting and humorous, his memoir offers a rare slice of aviation history.
