As our lives become complex with the demands of our affluent and accelerating society, do we hear the gospel's timeless and insistent call to live the “obedience of faith”? In these three “sermonic essays” Eldin Villafañe takes on the task of awakening true obedience of faith through the triple themes of discipleship, incarnation, and justice. Beginning with discipleship, he draws on the “Christ hymn” of Philippians 2 to challenge Christians to choose the costly Christ-life. He then offers six contrarian perspectives on the incarnation from the early church as correctives to our current, culturally conditioned theological emphases. Finally, taking the book of Amos as a touchstone, Villafañe issues a call for just leadership among the nations. Adding interest and depth to this work are an insightful foreword by Dean Loewen and responses to each essay by Richard Peace, Juan Francisco Martinez, and Veli-Matti Karkkainen. Eldin Villafañe has spent decades calling Christians to take seriously Christ's call to discipleship, incarnation, and justice. Beyond Cheap Grace not only renews that call but extends it to the church, the academy, and Christian leaders of all traditions.

This book provides a unique synthesis of liberation, queer and postcolonial theologians over the last few decades within a unified theological framework. It Will advance the inclusion of LGBT people within church and society. This book is a useful resource for all people who struggle to make sense of the traditional Christian doctrines of sin and grace in the 21st century. Throughout the history of Christianity, lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender ("LGBT" or "queer") people have been condemned as unrepentant sinners who are in dire need of God's saving grace. As a result of this condemnation, LGBT people have been subjected to great spiritual, emotional and physical abuse and violence. This issue has taken on a particular urgency in light of the horrific string of suicides over the last year of young LGBT people who were subjected to harassment and bullying by their classmates. Cheng argues that people need to be liberated from the traditional legal model of thinking about sin and grace as a violation of divine and natural laws in which grace is understood as the strength to refrain from violating such laws. Rather Cheng proposes a Christological model based upon the theologies of Irenaeus, Bonaventure and Barth, in which sin and grace are defined in terms of what God has done for us in Jesus Christ. - Publisher.

Often treated like the younger sibling in theology, the doctrine of sanctification has spent the last few decades waiting not-so-patiently behind ideas like election and justification by faith alone. In this volume, twelve theologians explore the meaning and significance of sanctification for contemporary evangelical theology and practice.

These essays by leading Latino/a theologians, both Protestant and Catholic, represent an exciting new stage in the development of Latino/a theological identity, while also making an important contribution to the wider cause of ecumenical dialogue. As Orlando Espn observes, "No ecumenical relation or dialogue today in the United States can be truly reflective of our respective churches unless Latinos/as (and their faith and their lives) are acknowledged as indispensable and equal conversation partners." Among the themes discussed in this dialogue: God, the Holy Spirit, Mary, the Bible and Tradition, Grace and Justification, and Ecclesiology. Pentecostals and Nonviolence explores how a distinctly Pentecostal-charismatic peace witness might be reinvigorated and sustained in the twenty-first century. To do so, the book examines the nature of the early Pentecostal commitment to nonviolence, and investigates the possibilities that might emerge from Pentecostals and Anabaptists entering into conversation and worship with each other. Contributors engage the arguments surrounding the heritage of Pentecostal pacifism in the United States and then move toward exploring nonviolence and peacemaking as crucial for contemporary Christianity as a whole. Ranging from theology, testimony, and pastoral ministry to interchurch relations, activism, and protest, this diverse collection of essays challenge and invite the whole church to the task of peacemaking while exploring the distinctive, and often neglected, contributions from the Pentecostal-charismatic tradition.

Leading theologian Terry Cross articulates the doctrine of the church's ministry from a Pentecostal perspective, demonstrating how Pentecostals can contribute to and learn from the church catholic. This companion volume to Cross's previous book, The People of God's Presence, proposes a radical revision of the structural framework of the local church within the often-overlooked corporate priesthood of all believers. Cross explores principles for leadership and ministry from the New Testament and the early church, helping all believers to do the work of ministry.
