The "laws" that govern our physical universe come in many guises-as principles, theorems, canons, equations, axioms, models, and so forth. They may be empirical, statistical, or theoretical, their names may reflect the person who first expressed them, the person who publicized them, or they might simply describe a phenomenon. However they may be named, the discovery and application of physical laws have formed the backbone of the sciences for 3,000 years. They exist by thousands. Laws and Models: Science, Engineering, and Technology-the fruit of almost 40 years of collection and research-compiles more than 1,200 of the laws and models most frequently encountered and used by engineers and technologists. The result is a collection as fascinating as it is useful. Each entry consists of a statement of the law or model, its date of origin, a one-line biography of the people involved in its formulation, sources of information about the law, and cross-references. Illustrated and highly readable, this book offers a unique presentation of the vast and rich collection of laws that rule our universe. Everyone with an interest in the inner workings of nature-from engineers to students, from teachers to journalists-will find Laws and Models to be not only a handy reference, but an engaging volume to read and browse.

Since the 1992 Earth Summit, there have been increased efforts on an international scale to address global climate change. Reducing the increased levels of CO2 and other "greenhouse gases," which are believed to be contributing to this climatic change, will require major effort on the part of the world's governments. This means that the environmental, economic, social, and political consequences of climate change must be understood, and that strategies to mitigate climate change must also address these issues. The workshop detailed in this book concentrated on how economic principles and analysis could contribute to the planning of forestry projects aimed at affecting terrestrial carbon balances. More than 30 international scientists came together for one week near Stockholm, Sweden and divided into working groups charged with addressing a specific issue and preparing a paper within this time frame. This book contains the majority of papers presented at this meeting, and includes both the working group papers and the individually presented papers.

Focusing on hydraulic components and machines rather than architectural or environmental noise control, this reference is unique in analyzing forces and moments in pumps ... showing how these forces produce noise at specific frequencies ... demonstrating how pump design controls these frequencies ... illustrating how a machine's noise-radiating surfaces affect noise ... and discussing fluid-borne noise. Noise Control of Hydraulic Machinery provides techniques for analyzing any pump type ... reviews the basics and terminology of sound, vibration, vibration isolation, fluid pulsations, Fourier analysis, cavitation, hydraulic shock, and enclosure design ... explains how pumps, motors, and valves generate airborne, structure-borne, and fluid-borne noises ... identifies hydraulic parameters that influence noise ... and guides planning programs for designing and developing quiet components or machines as well as quieting existing products. Illustrated with some 170 diagrams, Noise Control of Hydraulic Machinery is an essential reference for mechanical, fluid power, hydraulic, acoustical, and design engineers. Book jacket.

This book does not give a prediction of what the efficiency will be of the energy use of industrial processes in the future. However, it does give an exploration of limits to the efficiency of current processes and an indication of what might be achieved if new technologies can be developed. At the Department of Science, Technology and Society of Utrecht University research had been done to the opportunities for improvement of the energy efficiency in the short term since the 1980's. This had resulted in a comprehensive database on energy efficient measures. This database and a possible application are described in Chapter 3 of this book. The use of the database induced new research themes around efficiency improvement, e.g. concerning barriers for implementation of measures. It was around 1993 that I did a preliminary study to the potential for efficiency improvement in the long term. Historical analysis had shown us that the short term potential stayed constant over the years. It seemed to be replenished by the introduction of new technologies. This lead to the question whether there are limits to the efficiency, taking into account both thermodynamic considerations and ideas on the development and dissemination of new technologies.

With the prolific changes in the electronic environment, do you sometimes feel overwhelmed by the multiplying of electronic information resources, the different methods of access, and their combined impact on collection development? If so, Collection Development is the book to help you get a handle on what’s out there! In no time at all, you’ll be able to select and integrate electronic resources into collection development programs at even the most traditional of libraries! In the process, you will learn alternative approaches for dealing with electronic databases, on-line access, and fiscal planning for the integration of the new information technologies into collection development. Collection Development offers useful strategies for dealing with electronic resources in terms of selection and evaluation, collection development policies, organizational structure, and budgeting. You also acquire important information on: Internet information resources accessible through Gophers and World Wide Web sites access vs. ownership issues serving the remote user at an extended campus site the relationship of selection to acquisitions managing a CD-Rom collection development process planning issues of cooperation, collaboration, and change pricing and planning issues and their impact on library budgets negotiating site licenses Librarians in collection development, academic librarians, and personnel in technology/authomation development will find Collection Development an indispensable tool for grappling with the demands and pressures of screening and choosing the most suitable information resources from the dynamic, even saturated, world of technology. The book’s insights and practical methodologies will help you integrate new on-line and electronic information resources into your program with relative ease.
