This sumptuously illustrated volume analyzes artists' representations of angels and demons and heaven and hell from the Judeo-Christian tradition and describes how these artistic portrayals evolved over time. As with other books in the Guide to Imagery series, the goal of this volume is to help contemporary art enthusiasts decode the symbolic meanings in the great masterworks of Western Art. The first chapter traces the development of images of the Creation and the Afterworld from descriptions of them in the Scriptures through their evolution in later literary and philosophical works. The following two chapters examine artists' depictions of the two paths that humans may take, the path of evil or the path of salvation, and the punishments or rewards found on each. A chapter on the Judgment Day and the end of the world explores portrayals of the mysterious worlds between life and death and in the afterlife. Finally, the author looks at images of angelic and demonic beings themselves and how they came to be portrayed with the physical attributes--wings, halos, horns, and cloven hooves--with which we are now so familiar. Thoroughly researched by and expert in the field of iconography, Angels and Demons in Art will delight readers with an interest in art or religious symbolism.

In response to actual questions many people have asked him about angels and demons, well-known author and philosophy professor Peter Kreeft separates fact from fantasy and myth from reality as he answers 100 common questions about these spiritual beings. Based on a very popular college course he teaches on this subject, this book responds to the incredible amount of interest in angelic beings and attempts to clear up some of the misinformation abounding in the numerous books today on what we know about these mysterious spirits. Drawing on the Bible, traditional Church teaching and St. Thomas Aquinas, Kreeft gives straight, clear answers to the perennial and philosophical questions asked about angels and demons throughout time. In his typical lucid, profound and sometimes humorous style, Kreeft answers such questions as "What are angels made of?", "How do angels communicate with God?", "How do angels communicate with us?", "Do demons, or devils, or evil spirits really exist?" and many more. Includes angel art. Peter Kreeft, Ph.D., is a professor of philosophy at Boston College. He is a regular contributor to several Catholic publications, is in wide demand as a speaker at conferences, and is the author of over 20 books including Back to Virtue, Heaven the Heart's Deepest Longing and Fundamentals of the Faith.

Angels & Demons: The Illustrated Movie Companion is the only official book hailing the extraordinary filmmakers at the heart of this thought-provoking and totally unorthodox thriller. Reuniting Academy Award® winners Ron Howard, Brian Grazer, and Tom Hanks, this suspense-filled movie, based on Dan Brown's ticking-bomb novel, sprints through crypts, catacombs, and cathedrals to decipher clues prophesying the mutilation of cardinals with mysterious symbols. The story of how this movie was created is told here through the voices of the filmmakers, who explain the challenges of re-creating exact replicas of some of the world's most exquisite sites, including the Sistine Chapel, St. Peter's Basilica, St. Peter's Square, and Piazza Navona with Bernini's Fountain of the Four Rivers, among others. This lavishly illustrated book brims with more than 270 color photographs, including archival images, storyboard art, period paintings, and digital production art; insider's information about the creative process behind the production and scenic design, costumes, set decorations, paintings, sculptures, and props created for the movie by artisans in London, Italy, and Los Angeles; interviews with cast and crew members; a foreword by Dan Brown; and introductions by Ron Howard, Brian Grazer, and Todd Hallowell. Of his firsthand experience on the set of Angels & Demons, Dan Brown writes, "I was privileged to watch some of moviemaking's noblest soldiers as they did daily battle and conquered Herculean forces." Those forces are brought to life in this book that puts you right there on location in Rome, London, and Los Angeles with the novelist and the filmmakers of Angels & Demons.

They also explore the world of Bernini, master artist of the Baroque era, and the secret meanings behind his symbolism; what really happened in the trial of Galileo; and the real state-of-the-art of anti-matter technology. The Utrecht Psalter, one of the great survivals of the Carolingian Renaissance, was made about 820-835 at the Benedictine monastery of Hautvilliers and decorated with 166 dynamic, almost impressionistic pen drawings which are masterly interpretation of the Psalter text. In 1996 it was exhibited in Utrecht, alongside related manuscripts such as the Aachen and Ebbo Gospels, the Byzantine Khludov Psalter and the later English Harly and Eadwine Psalters, copied in Canterbury when the Utrecht Psalter was for some centuries in England. Five scholarly essays, designed for a wide-ranging readership, include a discussion of Carolingian cultural achievements; an analysis of the Psalter itself and its place in the history of book production; an overview of medieval Psalter illustration in both Byzantium and the West; and an exa- mination of the English copies of the Utrect Psalter in the later Middle Ages.
