Changeling knight in the court of the Duke of Shadowed Hills, October "Toby" Daye has survived numerous challenges that would destroy fae and mortal alike. Now Toby must take on a nightmarish new assignment. Someone is stealing both fae and mortal children-and all signs point to Blind Michael. When the young son of Toby's closest friends is snatched from their Northern California home, Toby has no choice but to track the villains down, even when there are only three magical roads by which to reach Blind Michael's realm-home of the legendary Wild Hunt-and no road may be taken more than once. If she cannot escape with all the children before the candle that guides and protects her burns away, Toby herself will fall prey to Blind Michael's inescapable power. And it doesn't bode well for the success of her mission that her own personal Fetch, May Daye-the harbinger of Toby's own death-has suddenly turned up on her doorstep... An Artificial Night is the third installment of the highly praised Toby Daye series.

While certain ecological problems associated with artificial night lighting are widely known-for instance, the disorientation of sea turtle hatchlings by beachfront lighting-the vast range of influences on all types of animals and plants is only beginning to be recognized. From nest choice and breeding success of birds to behavioral and physiological changes in salamanders, many organisms are seriously affected by human alterations in natural patterns of light and dark. Ecological Consequences of Artificial Night Lighting is the first book to consider the environmental effects of the intentional illumination of the night. It brings together leading scientists from around the world to review the state of knowledge on the subject and to describe specific effects that have been observed across a full range of taxonomic groups, including mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians, fishes, invertebrates, and plants. Ecological Consequences of Artificial Night Lighting provides a scientific basis to begin addressing the challenge of conserving the nighttime environment. It cogently demonstrates the vital importance of this until-now neglected topic and is an essential new work for conservation planners, researchers, and anyone concerned with human impacts on the natural world.

The "terrific ... moving, poetic, immersive, multifaceted, and thought-provoking" book (Publishers Weekly) that will open your eyes to the night. A brilliantly starry night is one of nature's most thrilling wonders. Yet in our world of nights as bright as day, most of us no longer experience true darkness. Eight out of ten Americans born today won't ever live where they can see the Milky Way. And exposure to artificial light at night has been cited as a factor in health concerns ranging from poor sleep to cancer. In his gorgeous debut, THE END OF NIGHT, Paul Bogard travels the globe to find the night, blending personal narrative, natural history, health, science, and folklore to shed light on darkness. Showing exactly what we've lost, what we have left, and what we might hope to regain, he attempts nothing less than a restoration of how we see the spectacularly primal, wildly dark night sky.

Light pollution generated by artificial night lighting can alter natural light patterns and have a negative impact on living organisms, including plants. This study determined the impact of artificial night lighting on yellow-poplar (Liriodendron tulipifera L.) seedlings using artificial street lighting (high-pressure sodium lamp). Seedlings were exposed to either natural night lighting (control) or artificial night lighting (treatment) with a photoperiod of 13 h day/11 h night over two years. Yellow-poplar seedlings were evaluated for their nighttime light response strategies, including photosynthetic light-harvesting relative to daytime gas exchange parameters, nighttime stomatal opening, photosystem II photochemistry, and photosynthetic function. Yellow-poplar seedlings exposed to artificial night lighting showed functional dynamics in their photosynthetic capacity, including night lighting inhibition of photosynthesis, reduced photochemical efficiency of photosystem II, and increased stomatal limitation, especially at the highest level of artificial night lighting. Furthermore, the nighttime stomatal opening was frequently observed in yellow-poplar leaves grown under artificial night lighting. Results of this study provide advances in the understanding of the interrelationship between photosynthetic downregulation and incomplete nighttime stomatal closure, via modification of photoperiod perception by circadian dysfunction.

The effects of light pollution on flora, fauna -including humans and their widely varying night-time activities- are often subtle and need extensive field studies to be quantified in a sensible manner. Some of the highlights were: The presentation of the 1st world atlas of artificial night sky brightness (Cinzano et al.); the article by the International Darksky Association on their world-wide efforts to curb light pollution (Alvarez del Castillo et al.); the laws controlling light pollution implemented in Spain (Diaz et al.) and Chile (Sanhueza et al.), an overview of the work on radio frequency protection of sites (Cohen et al.) and the excellent introduction to the topic from the Chilean point of view (Daud). Related topics in the book are light pollution education, aircraft contrails, space advertising (with an added document provided by the relevant UN commission), and an experiment on involving the population of an entire country in measuring sky brightness, by using the internet and the media. The text is aimed at professionals from a wide range of disciplines related to lighting and its effects on the night-time environment in the broadest sense of the word. Lay persons interested in this emerging multi-disciplinary field can also find much of interest in this book.

Effects of Artificial Night Lighting on Freshwater Littoral Ecosystems

Effects of Artificial Night Lighting on Freshwater Littoral Ecosystems

We found fish presence had no significant effects on littoral communities or processes. ANL increased riparian spider abundance and biomass and insect abundance. ANL also altered emergent and terrestrial invertebrate community composition.

Artificial night lighting (ANL) has increased concurrently with human habitation along shorelines, impacting littoral and riparian areas, which are hotspots for biodiversity and resource exchange. This has the potential to alter the natural light regime, and may influence resource subsidies between aquatic and riparian ecosystems. We expected a greater abundance of riparian spiders, and adult aquatic and terrestrial insects, along with changes in benthic-macroinvertebrate-community composition in areas exposed to ANL. To test these predictions, we installed 20 mesocosms in the littoral zone of Haven Hill lake and manipulated the presence of fish and ANL. We measured and analyzed benthic community composition, organic-matter decomposition, algal and macrophyte biomass, riparian spider density and biomass, and invertebrate infall. We found fish presence had no significant effects on littoral communities or processes. ANL increased riparian spider abundance and biomass and insect abundance. ANL also altered emergent and terrestrial invertebrate community composition. These results indicated that ANL along shorelines and in littoral zones can influence the transfer of resources across the aquatic-riparian boundary and have consequences for terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems.
