Not illustrated. 1901 edition. Excerpt: ... DUCK SHOOTING. PASS SHOOTING. Of all methods of duck shooting, that known as pass shooting is perhaps the most difficult and the most sportsmanlike. The gunner stations himself at some point where the ducks are likely to fly, and shoots them as they pass over him. This point 1ray be between two lakes or two portions of a single lake, or between roosting and feeding ground, or perhaps only near some lake at which the birds stop on their migrations. At all events, most of the shooting is overhead at swiftly flying birds, and great skill and judgment are required to make a satisfactory bag. Sometimes the gunner stands behind some cover of bushes, or he may sit or kneel in a pit dug in the ground, or at times, if the birds are newly arrived, and so are unsuspicious, he may stand out in plain view. However he may be concealed, if the shooter has been fortunate enough to secure a position in the direct line of flight, he will have interesting shooting, and will probably receive some new ideas as to the swiftness with which a duck passes through the air. Graphic accounts of this method of shooting have often been published. One of the best of these which has appeared in recent years, is from the pen of Mr. E. Hough, in Forest and Stream, in which he describes a day's shooting, in 1897, m North Dakota, as follows: At the head of the Dead Buffalo Lake there is a narrow strip of water separating it from a smaller lake above, and between this little sheltered basin and the wide, deep water, where the wild celery grows, there is a more or less constant flight of ducks. We put out our team and hastened quietly as we could down to this fly-way, seeking not to alarm the birds till we had taken our stand on the ridge between the lakes, where the rushes...

Modern American Environmentalists profiles the lives and contributions of nearly 140 major figures during the twentieth-century environmental movement. Included are iconic environmentalists such as Rachel Carson, E. O. Wilson, Gifford Pinchot, and Al Gore, and important but less expected names, including John Steinbeck and Allen Ginsberg. The entries recount how each individual became active in environmental conservation, detail his or her significant contributions, trace the influence of each on future efforts, and discuss the person's legacy. The individuals selected for the book displayed either an unparalleled commitment to the conservation, preservation, restoration, and enhancement of the natural environment or made a major contribution to the growth of environmentalism during its first century. With a foreword by environmental historian Everett I. Mendolsohn, a time line of key environmental events, a bibliography of groundbreaking works, and an index organized by specialization, this biographical encyclopedia is a handy and complete guide to the major people involved in the modern American environmental movement. -- Mark Harvey

In the summer of 1833, John James Audubon, his son and several friends embarked on the schooner Ripley and sailed from Eastport, Maine to Nova Scotia to the St. Lawrence. Audubon kept a detailed diary describing the land, the sea, the vegetation, the people and, above all, the birds that he encountered. Many of the paintings he created along the way are considered his most beautiful and are reproduced here in Audubon's Wilderness Palette. Many of the birds represented here have become extinct or are threatened. With the strokes of his brush, Audubon has in many ways preserved a natural legacy, permitting those who view his paintings and engravings the opportunity to visit a world that has vanished.
