Alice in Genderland is the first ever memoir by a crossdresser who is not content to live behind closed doors—and who takes it much further than his straighter, more circumspect peers might ever care to go. Most of the time, Harvard-educated psychiatrist Richard Novic is Rick, a man at the office or a husband and father at home. But one night a week, he is Alice, a woman about town, shopping, dining, dancing, and dating a man for nearly a decade. In contrast to the life he leads today, Rick Novic suffered since his sporty, nerdy boyhood with a secret, a desire he was in no way equipped to handle, but one that eventually burst through his denial, a few months before his wedding day. Just once, he felt, while he still could, he had to know how it felt to be a woman. Like Alice in Wonderland, his curiosity led him to fall headlong down a rabbit hole, through desperate straits, mind-opening surprises, heart-rending changes, gritty sex, and boundless love. By the time he was back on his feet, he was a different person, living a lifestyle he hadn’t known existed. Anyone who has struggled to figure out who they are and how they want to live will surely appreciate this informative and engaging life story. Praise for Alice in Genderland “Few know the transgender scene like GIRL TALK magazine’s Alice Novic. This exciting new memoir by her male alter ego takes us along with him and the people he loves, as he encounters and explores each twist and turn around him and within him. As much Lewis and Clark as it is Lewis Carroll, Alice in Genderland blazes a new trail in the world of crossdressing.” —Linda Jensen, contributing writer, Transgender Forum “Alice bravely explores the limits of gender, sexuality, and relationships—a sexy, poignant, and often hilarious memoir of transgenderism.” —Vernon A. Rosario, M.D., author of The Erotic Imagination, clinical faculty, UCLA Neuropsychiatric Institute “More provocative than soothing, Alice in Genderland is fascinating and well worth reading.” —Vern L. Bullough, Ph.D., author of Crossdressing, Sex, and Gender, past president of the Society of the Scientific Study of Sex

Lewis Carroll s Alice s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass

Lewis Carroll s Alice s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass

It is surprising how often the talismanic properties of Alice are used to grab

Emerging in several different versions during the author's lifetime, Lewis Carroll's Alice novels have a publishing history almost as magical and mysterious as the stories themselves. Zoe Jaques and Eugene Giddens offer a detailed and nuanced account of the initial publication of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass and investigate how their subsequent transformations through print, illustration, film, song, music videos, and even stamp-cases and biscuit tins affected the reception of these childhood favourites. The authors consider issues related to the orality of the original tale and its impact on subsequent transmission, the differences between the manuscripts and printed editions, and the politics of writing and publishing for children in the 1860s. In addition, they take account of Carroll's own responses to the books' popularity, including his writing of major adaptations and a significant body of meta-textual commentary, and his reactions to the staging of Alice in Wonderland. Attentive to the child reader, how changing notions of childhood identity and needs affected shifting narratives of the story, and the representation of the child's body by various illustrators, the authors also make a significant contribution to childhood studies.

A remarkable book! In turn, heartbreaking and hilarious. -- Tim Kazurinsky, Saturday Night Live, screenwriter of About Last NightThis is a firsthand look at the fascinating and controversial phenomenon of transexualism -- men who want to be women and women who want to be men. Gender is the most misunderstood topic of our time. The patients introduced in this book all fight quiet battles -- at home and in the workplace -- with what has been called the uninvited dilemma of being born into the wrong body. These intimate and engaging stories directly address this fascinating and controversial phenomenon.

This book takes a fresh look at the basic idea of 'literacy' and proposes some new definitions to take us into the twenty- first century. It brings together nine Australian scholars of distinction. They argue that schools must teach explicitly the nature of language, and that students must be given clear criteria for, and support in achieving, excellence in controlling the different types of written language used in their various fields of study. Teachers need a clear sense of the changing nature of literacy, of the differences between speech and writing, and of the characterstic patterns of discourse used in the school subjects they teach. The arguments about literacy are made using examples selected from students' writing and textbooks, and demonstrate in a pleasing way the benefit to education of some selected linguistic research. This book is essential reading for educational policy makers and curriculum writers, as well as for teachers of all levels and disciplines.

Equality Matters is an important collection of critical articles and case studies about equal opportunities work in the primary school. Accounts come from a wide range of schools and cover a variety of topics - such as children's books, multilingual storytelling, global education, technology, assessment, bullying, policy and management. The authors show how issues of language, gender, race, disability, class and sexuality are experienced in real classrooms and provide numerous ideas and resource suggestions for work in school. This book is written for primary teachers and teacher trainers, advisers and inspectors, and all those interested in equality of opportunity in primary schools. It is intended to record and disseminate good practice, and also to highlight and question the inequalities perpetuated through school organisation, curriculum content and methods of teaching and assessment.
