We have included most of the articles published in the newspaper Cantera of the city of Oaxaca during the first half of 1998. Although the common thread is labor, a subject that from my viewpoint does not lose its relevance and that continues to be a key point for the vital renewal of the economy and the creation of new social relations, the articles also touch on topics related to Oaxaca, the environment and the popular movement of 1968, as well as some interspersed with the teaching of mathematics and the updating of teachers. If the reading of these writings provokes in some people the desire to pull one or more ends of the skein, I will consider myself well served.

Each activity sets the scene by country and classroom and includes mathematical content, a materials list, teacher notes, extensions, research notes with references, and activity sheets. Any variations on these features are based on student age. To keep the character of the country of origin, the editors retained native language in some instances, use of local currency and measures in others, and even symbolism and idiomatic language if the language was essential to the original meaning. The research notes place the mathematics topics in an international setting; some sources are in other languages. This extraordinary resource not only engages students with hands-on, Common Core–aligned activities but also allows them to experience math with an international perspective, proving that mathematics is truly universal.

The audience remains much the same as for the 1992 Handbook, namely, mathematics education researchers and other scholars conducting work in mathematics education. This group includes college and university faculty, graduate students, investigators in research and development centers, and staff members at federal, state, and local agencies that conduct and use research within the discipline of mathematics. The intent of the authors of this volume is to provide useful perspectives as well as pertinent information for conducting investigations that are informed by previous work. The Handbook should also be a useful textbook for graduate research seminars. In addition to the audience mentioned above, the present Handbook contains chapters that should be relevant to four other groups: teacher educators, curriculum developers, state and national policy makers, and test developers and others involved with assessment.
