A definitive and approachable guide to life during, and after, breast cancer The biggest risk factor for breast cancer is simply being a woman. Madhulika Sikka's A Breast Cancer Alphabet offers a new way to live with and plan past the hardest diagnosis that most women will ever receive: a personal, practical, and deeply informative look at the road from diagnosis to treatment and beyond. What Madhulika Sikka didn't foresee when initially diagnosed, and what this book brings to life so vividly, are the unexpected and minute challenges that make navigating the world of breast cancer all the trickier. A Breast Cancer Alphabet is an inspired reaction to what started as a personal predicament. This A-Z guide to living with breast cancer goes where so many fear to tread: sex (S is for Sex - really?), sentimentality (J is for Journey - it's a cliché we need to dispense with), hair (H is for Hair - yes, you can make a federal case of it) and work (Q is for Quitting - there'll be days when you feel like it). She draws an easy-to-follow, and quite memorable, map of her travels from breast cancer neophyte to seasoned veteran. As a prominent news executive, Madhulika had access to the most cutting edge data on the disease's reach and impact. At the same time, she craved the community of frank talk and personal insight that we rely on in life's toughest moments. This wonderfully inventive book navigates the world of science and story, bringing readers into Madhulika's mind and experience in a way that demystifies breast cancer and offers new hope for those living with it. When Dr. Stacey Keen, a radiologist, viewed her own screening mammogram, she immediately knew she had cancer. Defeating Breast Cancer: A Physician's Story of Healing, Martial Arts and Life maps out her journey through diagnosis, treatment, and triumph. In telling her story, Dr. Keen relays not only her mental and emotional journey, but also her experience with complementary medicine (acupuncture) and her traditional course of treatment (surgery followed by chemotherapy and radiation therapy). Dr. Keen is candid, witty, and knowledgeable, and she offers a unique perspective as medical expert, patient, and survivor in one. Doctors, as well as cancer patients and their loved ones, will come away from her uplifting book well-informed, less apprehensive of life-saving treatments, and armed with invaluable resources. Dr. Keen's tale of survival brings encouragement, hope, and empowerment to anyone struggling with breast cancer or other life-threatening illnesses. Humor, positive attitude, and the best of Eastern and Western philosophy and medicine: I enlisted them all to maximize my chances of survival and to grow through this experience. Those who seek a somber tome about breast cancer should look elsewhere. Those who stay with me through these pages will glimpse a way of coping with cancer that I hope can brighten their lives.

Healing Together is written especially for the adult and child grieving together. Age does not make it easier or harder to cope with the anguish of losing a loved one. It is a time to grieve. This alphabet book on recovery from grief is presented from the perspective of the adult and that of the child. It is not written in a sequential format, but rather, the thoughts, reflections, and lessons stem from the collected experiences of mother, Karen Chouinard, and daughter, Holly Carpenter, over a span of many years, from the earliest stages of mourning to the present. As an added tool, Karen and Holly have listed additional words to encourage thoughtful and meaningful discussions between the adult and child, both of whom are embarking on their own personal journeys from grief to healing. Scripture has also been included as references for spiritual encouragement.

Malignant tumors due to breast cancer and masses due to benign disease appear in mammograms with different shape characteristics: the former usually have rough, spiculated, or microlobulated contours, whereas the latter commonly have smooth, round, oval, or macrolobulated contours. Features that characterize shape roughness and complexity can assist in distinguishing between malignant tumors and benign masses. In spite of the established importance of shape factors in the analysis of breast tumors and masses, difficulties exist in obtaining accurate and artifact-free boundaries of the related regions from mammograms. Whereas manually drawn contours could contain artifacts related to hand tremor and are subject to intra-observer and inter-observer variations, automatically detected contours could contain noise and inaccuracies due to limitations or errors in the procedures for the detection and segmentation of the related regions. Modeling procedures are desired to eliminate the artifacts in a given contour, while preserving the important and significant details present in the contour. This book presents polygonal modeling methods that reduce the influence of noise and artifacts while preserving the diagnostically relevant features, in particular the spicules and lobulations in the given contours. In order to facilitate the derivation of features that capture the characteristics of shape roughness of contours of breast masses, methods to derive a signature based on the turning angle function obtained from the polygonal model are described. Methods are also described to derive an index of spiculation, an index characterizing the presence of convex regions, an index characterizing the presence of concave regions, an index of convexity, and a measure of fractal dimension from the turning angle function. Results of testing the methods with a set of 111 contours of 65 benign masses and 46 malignant tumors are presented and discussed. It is shown that shape modeling and analysis can lead to classification accuracy in discriminating between benign masses and malignant tumors, in terms of the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve, of up to 0.94. The methods have applications in modeling and analysis of the shape of various types of regions or objects in images, computer vision, computer graphics, and analysis of biomedical images, with particular significance in computer-aided diagnosis of breast cancer.
