The state-of-the-art concept-based, student-centered introduction to nursing: first of two volumes, focused on 30 essential concepts associated with patients' psychosocial and reproductive concerns; with the nurse's professional domain; and with the nurse's roles and responsibilities in the broader healthcare system. Today, nurses must be able to transfer their knowledge to new situations, and stay current with new disorders, treatments, and evidence-based practice. Its concept-based approach requires students to participate actively, assume more responsibility for their knowledge, integrate concepts, apply information, and use clinical reasoning. Instead of memorizing thousands of alterations, students gain in-depth knowledge of selected alterations, and learn how to apply that knowledge as new challenges and client presentations come their way. The second of two volumes, this fully-updated Volume II focuses on 30 crucial concepts every nurse needs to master. It begins with several Psychosocial Modules covering addiction, cognition, culture/diversity, development, family, grief/loss, mood/affect, self, spirituality, stress/coping, and violence. After focusing on reproduction, it turns to the nursing domain, covering assessment, caring interventions, clinical decision making, collaboration, communication, care management, professional behaviors, and client teaching/learning. Finally, it turns to the nurse's broader roles, focusing on accountability, advocacy, evidence-based practice, healthcare systems, health policy, informatics, legal issues, quality improvement, and safety. The text's 30 concepts are illuminated with over 80 exemplars covering the entire lifespan. Teaching and Learning Experience This concept-based, student-centered text will help nurses master essential concepts of nursing, and apply critical thinking to deepen and extend this knowledge throughout their nursing careers. The elderly represent the fastest growing segment of the population in developed countries, reflected in the patient population presenting to EDs and hospitals. These patients more often than not have greater co-morbidities, more complicated workups and utilize more laboratory and radiologic services. This text is designed to teach emergency physicians how best to care for this specific demographic of patients. It addresses physiologic changes, high-risk conditions, and atypical presentations associated with elderly patients in the ED that result in frequent misdiagnosis or delays in diagnosis. It instructs the readers how best to care for elderly patients in order to minimize morbidity and mortality, addressing some of the difficult psychosocial issues that confront health care providers that care for elderly patients, such as psychiatric disease and end-of-life care. The utility of this text is not limited to emergency physicians, but it should be useful to all health care providers involved in the treatment of elderly patients with acute medical or surgical conditions.

The complex and dynamic interlinks between natural resource management (NRM) and development have long been recognized by national and international research and development organizations and have generated voluminous literature. However, much of what is available in the form of university course books, practical learning manuals and reference materials in NRM is based on experiences from outside Africa. Managing Natural Resources for Development in Africa: A Resource Book provides an understanding of the various levels at which NRM issues occur and are being addressed scientifically, economically, socially and politically. The book's nine chapters present state-of-the-art perspectives within a holistic African context. The book systematically navigates the tricky landscape of integrated NRM, with special reference to Eastern and Southern Africa, against the backdrop of prevailing local, national, regional and global social, economic and environmental challenges. The authors' wide experience, the rich references made to emerging challenges and opportunities, and the presentation of different tools, principles, approaches, case studies and processes make the book a rich and valuable one-stop resource for postgraduate students, researchers, policymakers and NRM practitioners. The book is designed to help the reader grasp in-depth NRM perspectives and presents innovative guidance for research design and problem solving, including review questions, learning activities and recommended further reading. The book was developed through a writeshop process by a multi-disciplinary team of lecturers from the University of Nairobi, Egerton University, Kenyatta University, the University of Zimbabwe, the University of Malawi, Makerere University and the University of Dar es Salam.
