Churches Catching the Wave of Christ's Love for the Nations

According to the way that we normally measure “success” and “progress,” things seem to be going in the wrong direction, writes author Pete Briscoe. Western Christianity, as a whole, is losing ground. The data indicates that the North American church is following the footsteps of our European spiritual ancestors into post-Christian society. Briscoe calls this time in history “Dry Lands.” And its symptoms include Christians feeling spiritually thirsty and tired, like they’ve been wandering through brush and thistles. They may even start to wonder, “Does it really matter? Is it really worth it?” Pete and his wife felt that way. After a particularly difficult year, they were just about ready to call it quits. With refreshing candor, Briscoe asks, “Don’t we all draw back and question the very premise of our faith”? How about you? Are you experiencing your own trial in the “dry land” of life? If so, you’re not alone. But take heart. Help is on the way. According to Briscoe, there’s a flood coming. A flood of God’s Spirit to rain down on this world. A tsunami of praise that’s rising up across the globe. “For the sake of your soul and the strength of your church, it’s time to be submerged in the life-giving waters of God’s global passions,” he writes. The Surge provides encouragement and hope to Christians who feel too weary to continue. It’s a book for people who live in a “dry land” – and desperately need God to refresh them.

Saga After the Surge

Hurricane Ike 2008 & Hurricane Harvey 2017

I originally wrote and self-published the first edition of this book, Saga After The Surge, in 2009 after I wanted to share my experiences of Hurricane Ike. With no promotion or marketing I sold over 150 printed copies and never really wanted to make money off of this story and eventually broke even. Over time, many have asked if they could purchase the book online or download digitally. I had intentions of converting it digitally, but never had any motivation to sell my story. In August 2017 Hurricane Harvey affected many close to me. During that journey I collected thoughts and some notes on my phone with a "just in case" mentality of writing another book. I didn't really see the point of writing a book about Hurricane Harvey because it did not physically affect me the way it did to many others that I knew. In February 2018, I was in Los Angeles, CA for business and I was having dinner with my cousin Amanda Clauson and her husband Sanjay. While were eating I was telling them about how the catastrophe of Hurricane Harvey had on close friends and family. I went on to tell them about how Hurricane Ike affected my wife Julie and I and how I wrote a book about it and carried on about other hurricane talk. There was a moment when Sanjay said "hurricanes really seem to fascinate you". Embarrassed by his observation, I agreed with him. From there I knew this was the time to put together a revised 2nd Edition of Saga After The Surge available for digital download with my story of Hurricane Harvey added. With completion of this story, I hope this will bring some closure for me with this fascination that destroyed my hometown. I edited the book and combined it into two parts; Part 1: Hurricane Ike 2008 with the original manuscript and the new Part 2: Hurricane Harvey 2017. This is my story about Hurricane Ike and the weeks following the landfall that changed my life and the emotional toll Hurricane Harvey did on me while watching helplessly from afar. I hope one that reads this can reflect on those days and maybe relate. The aftershocks of Ike and Harvey had on me is not comparable to the many problems that people, including close friends and family members, experienced during those hard, troubling times.

Ghost Riders of Baghdad

Soldiers, Civilians, and the Myth of the Surge

Author: Daniel A. Sjursen

From October 2006 to December 2007, Daniel A. Sjursen-then a U.S. Army lieutenant-led a light scout platoon across Baghdad. The experiences of Ghost Rider platoon provide a soldier's-eye view of the incredible complexities of warfare, peacekeeping, and counterinsurgency in one of the world's most ancient cities. Sjursen reflects broadly and critically on the prevailing narrative of the surge as savior of America's longest war, on the overall military strategy in Iraq, and on U.S. relations with ordinary Iraqis. At a time when just a handful of U.S. senators and representatives have a family member in combat, Sjursen also writes movingly on questions of America's patterns of national service. Who now serves and why? What connection does America's professional army have to the broader society and culture? What is the price we pay for abandoning the model of the citizen soldier? With the bloody emergence of ISIS in 2014, Iraq and its beleaguered, battle-scarred people are again much in the news. Unlike other books on the U.S. war in Iraq, Ghost Riders of Baghdad is part battlefield chronicle, part critique of American military strategy and policy, and part appreciation of Iraq and its people. At once a military memoir, history, and cultural commentary, Ghost Riders of Bahdad delivers a compelling story and a deep appreciation of both those who serve and the civilians they strive to protect. Sjursen provides a riveting addition to our understanding of modern warfare and its human costs.

My Journey with General David Petraeus and the Remaking of the Iraq War

"Surge" is an insider's view of the most decisive phase of the Iraq War. After exploring the dynamics of the war during its first three years, the book takes the reader on a journey to Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, where the controversial new U.S. Army and Marine Corps counterinsurgency doctrine was developed; to Washington, D.C., and the halls of the Pentagon, where the Joint Chiefs of Staff struggled to understand the conflict; to the streets of Baghdad, where soldiers worked to implement the surge and reenergize the flagging war effort before the Iraqi state splintered; and to the halls of Congress, where Ambassador Ryan Crocker and General David Petraeus testified in some of the most contentious hearings in recent memory. Using newly declassified documents, unpublished manuscripts, interviews, author notes, and published sources, "Surge" explains how President George W. Bush, Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, Ambassador Crocker, General Petraeus, and other U.S. and Iraqi political and military leaders shaped the surge from the center of the maelstrom in Baghdad and Washington.

Riding the Surge at a Combat Hospital in Iraq

IN 2004, AT THE AGE OF FORTY-EIGHT, DR. DAVE HNIDA, a family physician from Littleton, Colorado, volunteered to be deployed to Iraq and spent a tour of duty as a battalion surgeon with a combat unit. In 2007, he went back—this time as a trauma chief at one of the busiest Combat Support Hospitals (CSH) during the Surge. In an environment that was nothing less than a modern-day M*A*S*H, the doctors’ main objective was simple: Get ’em in, get ’em out. The only CSH staffed by reservists— who tended to be older, more-experienced doctors disdainful of authority—the 399th soon became a medevac destination of choice because of its high survival rate, an astounding 98 percent. This was fast-food medicine at its best: working in a series of tents connected to the occasional run-down building, Dr. Hnida and his fellow doctors raced to keep the wounded alive until they could be airlifted out of Iraq for more extensive repairs. Here the Hippocratic Oath superseded that of the pledge to Uncle Sam; if you got the red-carpet helicopter ride, his team took care of you, no questions asked. On one stretcher there might be a critically injured American soldier while three feet away lay the insurgent, shot in the head, who planted the IED that inflicted those wounds. But there was levity amid the chaos. On call round-the-clock with an unrelenting caseload, the doctors’ prescription for sanity included jokes, pranks, and misbehavior. Dr. Hnida’s deployment was filled with colorful characters and gifted surgeons, a diverse group who became trusted friends as together they dealt with the psychological toll of seeing the casualties of war firsthand. In a conflict with no easy answers and even less good news, Paradise General gives us something that we can all believe in—the story of an ordinary citizen turned volunteer soldier trying to make a difference. With honesty and candor, and an off-the-wall, self-deprecating humor that sustained him and his battle buddies through their darkest hours, Dr. Hnida delivers a devastating and inspiring account of his CSH tour and an unparalleled look at medical care during an unscripted war.
