Anschließend werden die Prinzipien und Grundlagen der Animation und deren Anwendung auf 3D dargelegt und erklärt. Des Weiteren wird insbesondere auf die Charakterentwicklung eingegangen und exemplarisch ausgewählte Charaktere des klassischen Zeichentrick und der 3D-Animation analysiert und verglichen. Zudem werden einige Techniken der Computeranimation in Bezug auf Modellierung, Material, Licht und Kamera sowie Animation und Rendering vorgestellt. Dadurch liegt eine Art Regelwerk für die Erstellung von geeigneten Charakteren vor, das die Grundlage für den praktischen Teil bildet. Im praktischen Teil der Diplomarbeit wird auf die Konzeption und Realisierung eines eigenen 3D Charakters eingegangen. Herangehensweise, Charaktereigenschaften, Entwürfe und das Storyboard sind Bestandteile der Konzeption, die Realisierung ist analog zu den Techniken der Computeranimation im theoretischen Teil aufgebaut und beschreibt die Modellierung, Animation, Beleuchtung, die verwendeten Materialien und Kameraeinstellungen.
