by Elias G. Theros, M. D. I. Meschan Distinguished Professor of Radiology, Wake Forest University Medical Center, Winston-Salem, North Carolina, USA Amongst the present generation of radiologists, beguiled by the glamour and excitement of the new high tech imaging and interventional modalities, too few have developed a strong sense of differential diagnosis based on radiologic pattern recognition and its correlation with clinical and laboratory fmdings. There is no question about the incredible contribution by the new modalities to our diagnostic armamentarium, but in the evolution of mod em-day radiologic practice, the cognitive element has been neglected and our abilities as diagnosticians have suffered. The advent of this third edition of Reeder and Felson's Gamuts in Radiology is timely and welcome. As always, use of the gamut lists will help evoke differential thinking, and this has been enhanced by the addition of over 250 new gamuts as well as by the updating of over three-fourths of the existing gamuts. Interestingly, about 130 of the new gamuts are MRI Gamuts developed by Dr. William Bradley whose enormous experience in clinical MRI has prepared him to think differentially about look-a-like patterns and/or locations of lesions displayed by this modality. This is an important step forward in the use of this remarkable new diagnostic tool.

This volume, the sixth in the IBAGS series, summarizes major contributions in clinical and basic research on the basal ganglia. The sixth meeting of the Society was held on Cape Cod, in the state of Massachusetts, USA, in October, 1998. Altogether 16 countries were represented by 227 participants. This volume contains papers contributed by participants. The focus of the sixth triennial IBAGS meeting, and of this volume, was to bring to gether leaders in basic and clinical science to address two sets of still-persisting questions in the field. The first set focuses on the functions of the basal ganglia in health and disease: What are the core functions of the basal ganglia and cortico-basal ganglia loops? How are these core functions disrupted in disorders affecting the basal ganglia? How do we account for the broad range of behaviors affected by basal ganglia disorders and for the increasing evidence that the basal ganglia influence cognitive as well as motor functions? These issues are addressed in the first five sections of the current volume, which summarize advances in the study of basal ganglia disorders based on studies in humans (Section 1), new results obtained with experimental animal models of basal ganglia disorders (Section 2), results of experiments on information coding in the basal ganglia (Section 3) and new information about functions of the basal ganglia related to learning and adaptive motor control (Section 4).

Notwithstanding the important role of direct clinical and endoscopic examination in modern management of pathological conditions of the larynx, radiological study the and, more specifically, cross-sectional imaging by CT and MRI make definite diagnostic contributions by virtue of their potential to display superbly the deeper extent of laryngeal lesions. Indeed, remarkable progress has been achieved during recent years in CT and MRI techniques as applied to the neck region. This book sets out to provide a sorely needed update of our knowledge of the diagnostic potential of these cross-sectional methods and constitutes a very welcome addition to our series "Medical Radiology", which aims to cover all important clinical imaging fields of modern diagnostic radiology. It will be of great interest to general and head and neck radiologists as well as to ENT surgeons and radiotherapists. Professor R. Hermans and the other distinguished contributors to this work are internationally renowned experts in the field and they have accumulated vast experi ence and a wealth of radio-pathological knowledge of the larynx over the years. I would like to congratulate them most sincerely for this outstanding volume, its comprehensive contents and its superb illustrations. I hope that this book will meet with the same great success as previously published volumes in the series. I would appreciate any constructive criticism that might be offered.
