When the German Focke Wulf Fw190 fighter burst onto the scene over France in 1941 it took the RAF by surprise, outperforming the Spitfire Mk V. At the time the RAF described the performance gap as 'a quantum leap'. Its superior performance on the Eastern Front had a significant impact in the air war against the Soviet Union. Graeme Douglas gets under the skin of the Fw190 with the new-build Focke Wulf Fw190A-8 and D-9 models built by the Flug Werk company in Germany. He also describes flying and maintaining the Fw190 in combat.

The Focke-Wulf Fw 190 D, better known to its contemporaries as the Langnasen Dora (Long-nose Dora), was the finest project created by Kurt Tank s design team to see service in numbers. It duly capitalized on all their previous experience in building high-performance fighters. The D-9, the aircraft s most popular variant, was first flown on 7th September 1944. Soon it made its presence felt both on the western and eastern fronts. A total of some 700 machines (sources vary) were assembled in Focke-Wulf plant at Cottbus, as well as by Arado and Fieseler contractors, by the end of the war. The D-9 powered by Jumo 213A-1 engine was practically the only variant to see serial production. The later D-11, D-12 and D-13 variants, powered by Jumo 213F-1 engines, were approved for production in March 1945, and only a few were delivered. D-12 s armament was one engine-mounted 30-mm MK 108 cannon and two 20-mm MG 151s in the wing roots. The D-13 differed from the D-12 by having a 20 mm engine-mounted MG 151 cannon in place of the 30 mm MK 108 unit. If only handled with skill, the Dora was a formidable opponent, capable of outrunning and outmaneuvering any allied fighter it was pitted against."

As the Luftwaffes standard fighter, beginning in 1937 the Bf 109 was produced in large numbers and after the outbreak of the Second World War saw action over every front. With this light, high-performance aircraft Professor Willy Messerschmitt had created a ground-breaking design. The Bf 109 had to remain in continuous development in order to keep pace with advances in Allied fighter design. 1941 saw the advent of the Bf 109 F, a clearly improved version, which was soon replaced by the more powerful and better armed Bf 109 G. The Bf 109 H high-altitude fighter reached a ceiling of 14,000 meters, and the Bf 109 K, the most potent of all the variants of this fighter aircraft, entered production in the last year of the war. This is a complete summary of all versions from the Bf 109 F to K with many photographs, some never before published, and details.

During more than two decades of uninterrupted flying Eric 'Winkle' Brown enjoyed the most extraordinary career of any test pilot and no pilot has a logbook that lists a greater variety of aircraft types flown. The first naval officer to head the elite Aerodynamics Flight at the world renowned Royal Aircraft Establishment, Farnborough, 'Winkle' Brown fulfilled his childhood ambition to fly German aircraft. Indeed, he was to fly no fewer than 55 individual German aircraft types, ranging from such exotic creations as the push-and-pull Dornier Do 335 and the remarkable little Heinkel He 162 Volksjager to the highly innovative combat types that were entering the inventory of the Luftwaffe shortly before the demise of Germany's Third Reich. 'Winkle' Brown also interrogated many of the leading German wartime aviation personalities, such as Willy Messerschmitt, Ernst Heinkel, Kurt Tank, and Hanna Reitsch. From his unique knowledge of German aviation, 'Winkle' Brown has selected the most important and most promising aircraft employed by the Luftwaffe and those evolved for that air arm in Germany during World War II--the true wings of the Luftwaffe. He describes their background and characteristics, and together with more than 200 photographs, color profiles, and sectional drawings provides an in-depth assessment of the contribution made to the annals of military aviation in the late 1930s and early 1940s by an aircraft industry that proved itself truly second to none in ingenuity.

Scratch-building brand new Spitfires or restoring original examples to airworthy condition has become big business, with aircrafts changing hands for several million dollars apiece. Husband and wife author team Paul and Louise Blackah look into what is required to find a Spitfire that's suitable for restoration and then return it to the skies. With Paul's vast experience in restoring and maintaining the RAF BBMF's Spitfires, and both Paul and Louise's contacts in the aircraft restoration community, this promises to be a unique look inside the world of Spitfire building and restoration in the 21st century.

Conceived and developed as a civilian airliner during the 1930s, the elegant four-engined Focke-Wulf Fw200 Condor soon became one of the Luftwaffe's most immediately recognizable and potent maritime armed reconnaissance aircraft. Following its introduction into service in 1939, the Condor took part in the German campaign against Norway and the British Isles in 1940 before being subsequently deployed over the Mediterranean in 1941 and the Atlantic between 1940 and 1944. Used as a transport for high-level German personnel in the Fliegerstaffel des Fhrers, as well as military transport missions on the Eastern Front, the Condor became involved in the catastrophic Stalingrad airlift. Later in the war, over the Atlantic convoy routes and despite the introduction by the Allies of escort carriers, catapult-fighter ships and long-range patrol aircraft, the Fw200 continued to wage an anti-shipping campaign, but by the autumn of 1944 and into 1945, it was relegated to pure transport missions flying from bases in Norway. In Focke-Wulf Fw200:The Condor at War, Chris Goss and Gnther Ott present the most richly detailed narrative ever written on the campaigns undertaken by the Fw200. Their account is accompanied by hundreds of rare images, many previously unpublished, representing the largest assembly of photography relative to the aircraft ever published. A unique reference source for historians and modelers alike.

This jet has become so popular that every four minutes--24 hours a day, seven days a week--an A380 is taking off or landing somewhere in the world.
