In this follow-up to We Animals, Canadian photojournalist Jo-Anne McArthur explores zoos and aquaria, and how "we" animals interact with "those" animals. In over one hundred photographs, Captive reveals the lives of animals in zoos and aquaria around the world. McArthur photographed animals in these situations for over a decade, and the book will include images from over 20 countries on five continents, shot most recently in the last year while she was working with The Born Free Foundation in Europe. The book has contributions from Virginia McKenna, co-founder of the Born Free Foundation, philosopher Lori Gruen, and Ron Kagan, CEO of the Detroit Zoo. We're at an important point in history right now. More than ever, ordinary people are thinking about the ethics of keeping animals in captivity for our entertainment. This reflection will help propel us into a new era of (re)considering our relationship with other animals. Captive aims to be a part of these important discussions.

There is plenty of creativity within the international graffiti and street art scene. Writing text messages in public spaces has been a unique art form and a means of communication between humans for thousands of years. Many street artists work only with text, written messages or poems, and not necessarily only with colourful murals, styles, tags and logos. Street Messages is the first publication that delivers a deep insight into this literary form of expression in the world of global street art. We are confronted with a vast amount of written information in the form of advertising and street or shop signs every single day of our lives. Reading and decoding this information has become a daily routine. Apart from the texts that are trying to sell us something or direct us somewhere, the streets are full of artistic and poetic forms of expression - messages written by graffiti and street artists. Street Messages offers a historic background to written messages in public spaces and introduces more than 80 artists from across the world who work exclusively or partly with text. The vast body of information and numerous exclusive quotes and words of wisdom makes Street Messages the first book to shed some light on this as yet undocumented form of street art culture. Features artwork by Banksy, Dolk, Ben Eine, Faith 47, Flint..., Kid Acne, Know Hope, Mobstr, Skki and many others.

Stand-Up Comedy in Chicago

Author: Vince Vieceli,Bill Brady

Publisher: Arcadia Publishing

ISBN: 1439642710

Category: Performing Arts

Page: 128

Ten years after Chicago saw its first full-time comedy club open, the landscape was decidedly different. “Stand-up comedy has exploded in the last couple of years,” a club owner told the Chicago Tribune in 1985, “that’s the only way to describe it: exploded.” It was truly a comedy boom, with as many as 16 clubs operating at once, and it lasted nearly a decade before fading, taking with it some of Chicago’s oldest comedy stages, including the Comedy Cottage, Comedy Womb, and Who’s on First. Still, stalwarts like Barrel of Laughs (south) and Zanies (north) persevered. That part of the story is known; overlooked is the fact there was a comedy boom, period. To hear the story, it is as if stand-up comedy innately morphed from a dated nightclub scene to what one Chicago Sun-Times writer called “Chicago’s atomic comedy blast.”
