James Stewart, author of the worldwide, best-selling Calculus texts, along with two of his former Ph.D. students, Lothar Redlin and Saleem Watson, collaborated in writing this text to address a problem they frequently saw in their calculus courses: many students were not prepared to think mathematically but attempted instead to memorize facts and mimic examples. College Algebra was written specifically to help students learn to think mathematically and to develop true problem-solving skills. This comprehensive, evenly paced book highlights the authors' commitment to encouraging conceptual understanding. To implement this goal, Stewart, Redlin, and Watson incorporate technology, the rule of four, real-world applications, and extended projects and writing exercises to enhance a central core of fundamental skills. At the beginning of the twentieth century, college algebra was taught differently than it is nowadays. There are many topics that are now part of calculus or analysis classes. Other topics are covered only in abstract form in a modern algebra class on field theory. Fine's College Algebra offers the reader a chance to learn the origins of a variety of topics taught in today's curriculum, while also learning valuable techniques that, in some cases, are almost forgotten. In the early 1900s, methods were often emphasized, rather than abstract principles. In this book, Fine includes detailed discussions of techniques of solving quadratic and cubic equations, as well as some discussion of fourth-order equations. There are also detailed treatments of partial fractions, the method of undetermined coefficients, and synthetic division. The book is ostensibly an algebra book; however, it covers many topics that are found throughout today's curriculum: calculus and analysis: infinite series, partial fractions, undetermined coefficients, properties of continuous functions, number theory: continued fractions, probability: basic results in probability. Though the book is structured as a textbook, modern mathematicians will find it a delight to dip into. There are many gems that have been overlooked by today's emphasis on abstraction and generality. By revisiting familiar topics, such as continued fractions or solutions of polynomial equations, modern readers will enrich their knowledge of fundamental areas of mathematics, while gaining concrete methods for working with their modern incarnations. The book is suitable for undergraduates, graduate students, and researchers interested in algebra.

This new text provides a contemporary approach to college algebra, ideal for the many skeptical or apprehensive students who ask, When am I ever going to use this? The key phrase is Make It Real since the goal is to make the material relevant and understandable to today's college students. But many books make this claim--so how is COLLEGE ALGEBRA: MAKE IT REAL different? In other texts, which simply wrap real-world situations around problems, the context isn't needed to do the mathematics. Written by skilled and passionate teachers, this text uses real-world data sets and situations to draw out mathematical concepts. Students are immersed in familiar contexts--from golf course ratings to Egyptian pyramids--from which concepts emerge naturally, and then guided in using their understanding of those ideas to make sense of the mathematics. The real-world contexts are not only helpful for understanding procedures--they're necessary. The concept of a function, the use of modeling, and the thorough integration of real-world applications are integral to the text. If there's one new college algebra text crafted to stand up to a reality check comparison with your current book, this is it.
