The Rise of the Rational State in France, Japan, the United States, and Great Britain

Blending political, historical, and sociological analysis, Bernard S. Silberman offers a provocative explanation for the bureaucratic development of the modern state. The study of modern state bureaucracy has its origins in Max Weber's analysis of the modes of social domination, which Silberman takes as his starting point. Whereas Weber contends that the administration of all modern nation-states would eventually converge in one form characterized by rationality and legal authority, Silberman argues that the process of bureaucratic rationalization took, in fact, two courses. One path is characterized by permeable organizational boundaries and the allocation of information by "professionals." The other features well-defined boundaries and the allocation of information by organizational rules. Through case studies of France, Japan, the United States, and Great Britain, Silberman demonstrates that this divergence stems from differences in leadership structure and in levels of uncertainty about leadership succession in the nineteenth century. Silberman concludes that the rise of bureacratic rationality was primarily a response to political problems rather than social and economic concerns. Cages of Reason demonstrates how rationalization can have occurred over a wide range of cultures at various levels of economic development. It will be of considerable interest to readers in a number of disciplines: political science, sociology, history, and public administration. "Silberman has produced an invaluable, densely packed work that those with deep knowledge of public administrative development will find extremely rewarding." —David H. Rosenbloom, American Political Science Review "An erudite, incisive, and vibrant book, the product of intensive study and careful reflection. Given its innovative theoretical framework and the wealth of historical materials contained in it, this study will generate debate and stimulate research in sociology, political science, and organizational theory. It is undoubtedly the best book on the comparative evolution of the modern state published in the last decade."—Mauro F. Guillen, Contemporary Sociology

Conducting business across national borders is nothing new; the Knights Templar were banking internationally as long ago as 1135. But modern globalization processes raise different challenges, and as the world becomes smaller and labour movements more common, an international understanding of human resource management is essential. The second edition of International HRM provides a fully updated and revised analysis of this important area. Its innovative, multi-disciplinary approach allows a holistic picture to emerge in which key issues are assessed from organizational, individual and societal perspectives. The collection is divided into three parts: the contemporary internationalization context the management of international employees strategic issues facing international HR managers. Supported by new research, and including work from eminent writers in the field, this book discusses issues as diverse as the relative absence of women in international work, the ethical merits of localization, and the context faced by organizations like the United Nations. It is a valuable tool for all students, researchers and practitioners working in international business and human resource management.

This edited collection explores the genesis of Bourdieu's classical book Distinction and its international career in contemporary Social Sciences. It includes contributions from contemporary sociologists from diverse countries who question the theoretical legacy of this book in various fields and national contexts. Invited authors review and exemplify current controversies concerning the theses promoted in Distinction in the sociology of culture, lifestyles, social classes and stratification, with a specific attention dedicated to the emerging forms of cultural capital and the logics of distinction that occur in relation to material consumption or bodily practices. They also empirically illustrate the theoretical contribution of Distinction in relation with such notions as field or habitus, which fruitfulness is emphasized in relation with some methodological innovations of the book. In this respect, a special focus is put on the emerging stream of "distinction studies" and on the opportunities offered by the geometrical data analysis of social spaces.

The hydrological sciences typically present grey or fuzzy information, making them quite messy and a choice challenge for fuzzy logic application. Providing readers with the first book to cover fuzzy logic modeling as it relates to water science, the author takes an approach that incorporates verbal expert views and other parameters that allow him to eschew the use of mathematics. The book’s first seven chapters expose the fuzzy logic principles, processes and design for a fruitful inference system with many hydrological examples. The last two chapters present the use of those principles in larger scale hydrological scales within the hydrological cycle.

Public Speech and the Culture of Public Life in the Age of Gladstone

By the last decades of the nineteenth century, more people were making more speeches to greater numbers in a wider variety of venues than at any previous time. This book argues that a recognizably modern public life was created in Victorian Britain largely through the instrumentality of public speech. Shedding new light on the careers of many of the most important figures of the Victorian era and beyond, including Gladstone, Disraeli, Sir Robert Peel, John Bright, Joseph Chamberlain, Winston Churchill, Lloyd George, Charles Haddon Spurgeon, and Canon Liddon, the book traces the ways in which oratory came to occupy a central position in the conception and practice of Victorian public life. Not a study of rhetoric or a celebration of great oratory, the book stresses the social developments that led to the production and consumption of these speeches.

Music at the Limits

Music at the Limits is the first book to bring together three decades of Edward W. Said's essays and articles on music. Addressing the work of a variety of composers, musicians, and performers, Said carefully draws out music's social, political, and cultural contexts and, as a classically trained pianist, provides rich and often surprising assessments of classical music and opera. Music at the Limits offers both a fresh perspective on canonical pieces and a celebration of neglected works by contemporary composers. Said faults the Metropolitan Opera in New York for being too conservative and laments the way in which opera superstars like Pavarotti have "reduced opera performance to a minimum of intelligence and a maximum of overproduced noise." He also reflects on the censorship of Wagner in Israel; the worrisome trend of proliferating music festivals; an opera based on the life of Malcolm X; the relationship between music and feminism; the pianist Glenn Gould; and the works of Mozart, Bach, Richard Strauss, and others. Said wrote his incisive critiques as both an insider and an authority. He saw music as a reflection of his ideas on literature and history and paid close attention to its composition and creative possibilities. Eloquent and surprising, Music at the Limits preserves an important dimension of Said's brilliant intellectual work and cements his reputation as one of the most influential and groundbreaking scholars of the twentieth century.

Career Theory and Practice: Learning Through Case Studies, Second Edition, provides the reader with hands-on, practical examples of how to apply career development theories to career counseling clients. This book serves as that bridge between theory and practice. Woven through the chapters is the presentation of ′Leslie,′ a fictitious client, actually the composite portrait of several past clients. As each chapter focuses on a different career development theory and presents specific cases, the authors enhance the practical slant of their work by applying the theories discussed to ′Leslie,′ as well as to a second case unique to each chapter. The second edition includes a new chapter highlighting the importance of various types of assessment in career counseling, and addressing the role of ethics and professional issues. In addition, new pedagogical features include ′Counselor Cognitions′ to guide hypotheses about clients, and ′Personal Reflections′ to facilitate the application of material to studentsÆ own career development. The second edition also includes added material that highlights the role of the economy and the changing nature of the workforce that influence the career and work decisions individuals make. Swanson and Fouad bring their own experiences as practitioners, researchers, and teachers in their approach to writing this new edition. This book is intended for students in graduate level career or vocational psychology or career practicum courses as well as counseling practitioners needing additional resources to strengthen their services or expand their focus.

The Oxford Handbook of Organizational Climate and Culture

The Oxford Handbook of Organizational Climate and Culture presents the breadth of topics from Industrial and Organizational Psychology and Organizational Behavior through the lenses of organizational climate and culture. The Handbook reveals in great detail how in both research and practice climate and culture reciprocally influence each other. The details reveal the many practices that organizations use to acquire, develop, manage, motivate, lead, and treat employees both at home and in the multinational settings that characterize contemporary organizations. Chapter authors are both expert in their fields of research and also represent current climate and culture practice in five national and international companies (3M, McDonald's, the Mayo Clinic, PepsiCo and Tata). In addition, new approaches to the collection and analysis of climate and culture data are presented as well as new thinking about organizational change from an integrated climate and culture paradigm. No other compendium integrates climate and culture thinking like this Handbook does and no other compendium presents both an up-to-date review of the theory and research on the many facets of climate and culture as well as contemporary practice. The Handbook takes a climate and culture vantage point on micro approaches to human issues at work (recruitment and hiring, training and performance management, motivation and fairness) as well as organizational processes (teams, leadership, careers, communication), and it also explicates the fact that these are lodged within firms that function in larger national and international contexts.
