An explosive account of the resentments American policies are sowing around the world and of the payback that will be our harvest in the twenty-first century. Blowback, a term invented by the CIA, refers to the uninted consequences of American policies. In this sure-to-be-controversial book, Chalmers Johnson lays out in vivid detail the dangers faced by our overextended empire, which insists on projecting its military power to every corner of the earth and using American capital and markets to force global economic integration on its own terms. From a case of rape by U.S. servicemen in Okinawa to our role in Asia's financial crisis, from our early support for Saddam Hussein to our actions in the Balkans, Johnson reveals the ways in which our misguided policies are planting the seeds of future disaster. In the wake of the Cold War, the United States has imprudently expanded the commitments it made over the previous forty years, argues Johnson. In Blowback, he issues a warning we would do well to consider: it is time for our empire to demobilize before our bills come due.

The true story of how US intelligence organizations employed Nazi war criminals in clandestine warfare and propaganda against the USSR, anticolonial revolutionaries, and progressive movements worldwide that were claimed to be Soviet pawns; includes a new, previously suppressed introduction by the author on the CIA’s declassification of Nazi-related records Even before the final shots of World War II were fired, another war began—a cold war that pitted the United States against its former ally, the Soviet Union. As the Soviets consolidated power in Eastern Europe, the CIA scrambled to gain the upper hand against new enemies worldwide. To this end, senior officials at the CIA, National Security Council, and other elements of the emerging US national security state turned to thousands of former Nazis, Waffen Secret Service, and Nazi collaborators for propaganda, psychological warfare, and military operations. Many new recruits were clearly responsible for the deaths of countless innocents as part of Adolph Hitler’s “Final Solution,” yet were whitewashed and claimed to be valuable intelligence assets. Unrepentant mass murderers were secretly accepted into the American fold, their crimes forgotten and forgiven with the willing complicity of the US government. Blowback is the first thorough, scholarly study of the US government’s extensive recruitment of Nazis and fascist collaborators right after the war. Although others have approached the topic since, Simpson’s book remains the essential starting point. The author demonstrates how this secret policy of collaboration only served to intensify the Cold War and has had lasting detrimental effects on the American government and society that endure to this day.

Seven years earlier, France's top chef, Marc Fraysse, summoned the world's culinary press to his remote restaurant in central France to make an announcement that he said would cause shockwaves in the culinary community. Speculating that Fraysse's restaurant was about to lose one of his precious Michelin stars, the reporters were shocked to find instead that the great chef had been murdered. In the end, the media left without a clue about the message the chef intended to deliver or about who might have killed him. Continuing his string of investigations into stubborn cold cases, ex-forensics superstar Enzo Macleod takes on the case, diving into the big business and high stakes of French haute cuisine. Winter has settled in around the mountaintop restaurant, causing complications. And as he learns more about the complex web of relationships that surrounded the celebrated (if also mercurial) chef--a spurned lover, a jealous wife, an estranged brother, an embittered food critic--Macleod begins to see parallels with his own life and loves. In diving into this new case, he finds himself reopening old wounds of his own . . .

On 29 June 1988 Michael Forwell (aka The Fox) had it all - fast cars and speedboats, a nightclub in Singapore, a private island, a beautiful wife and children. And a ship heading towards California carrying 72 tons of high-grade Thai marijuana, his last deal before going straight. On 30 June the DEA seized the ship in the biggest dope bust in history ... and very soon Michael had nothing at all. A mild-mannered, public school educated Englishman who abhors violence, Michael was not the most likely drug smuggler but he was certainly one of the most successful. Now he shares his astonishing adventures as he found ever more inventive ways to smuggle dope from South-East Asia to the US. By the eighties Michael was juggling aliases, dodging the authorities and making millions of dollars. Until that final deal, too good to pass by, went horribly wrong and he was forced to go on the lam. Fast-paced and funny, The Fox takes us on an adrenalin-charged journey with a charming rogue, revealing the fun he had and the price he ultimately paid.

Linguistic Nationalism, Institutional Decay, and Ethnic Conflict in Sri Lanka

In the mid-1950s, Sri Lanka’s majority Sinhalese politicians began outbidding one another on who could provide the greatest advantages for their community, using the Sinhala language as their instrument. The appeal to Sinhalese linguistic nationalism precipitated a situation in which the movement to replace English as the country’s official language with Sinhala and Tamil (the language of Sri Lanka’s principal minority) was abandoned and Sinhala alone became the official language in 1956. The Tamils’ subsequent protests led to anti-Tamil riots and institutional decay, which meant that supposedly representative agencies of government catered to Sinhalese preferences and blatantly disregarded minority interests. This in turn led to the Tamils’ mobilizing, first politically then militarily, and by the mid-1970s Tamil youth were bent on creating a separate state.

Blowback is a non-fiction, first-person memoir about the unintended consequences of failed workplace ethics. Blowback, a prequel to Whistleblower (Bay Tree Publishing, 2010) is based on real events that took place before the whistle was blown. Faculty member, scientist, and educator Amy Block Joy loved her job at the University of California, Davis. For two decades, she administered a highly successful, multi-million-dollar poverty program that provided training to thousands of Californians who needed it most. Working diligently to enforce the federal, state, and university rules, she was frequently criticized by her colleagues and supervisors for not getting them more money. After the federal government requested an extensive audit of the program, her policy of keeping a tight rein on millions of federal dollars was confirmed by the audit results. Not deterred by threats or intimidation by her esteemed colleagues and supervisors, Block Joy focused on making a difference in the lives of the program's needy families. So why did her highly educated colleagues and supervisors become involved in a $2.3 million scandal at her university? Were they duped? Pressured? Was it the money, power, prestige? The answer will surprise even the most cynical. Blowback tells a cautionary story about the importance of workplace ethics. By observing the mundane routines at her publically funded university, Blowback presents a stunning account of how complex financial structures, loosely based accountability, rule-bending for leadership, the pressure to conform, and money woes can lead to an atmosphere of mistrust. Reflecting on workplace discontent, along with her own hard-fought personal experiences, Block Joy offers a masterful strategy to improve workplace ethics and reduce fraud. Blowback happened at Block Joy's institution. This book can stop it from happening at yours.
